That picture is ****ing stupid and there is no reason to act like this is an "either/or" situation. They are both important causes and I hope that Sarkeesian is able to use those funds to surround herself with the right people so that she is actually able to get her point across in a way that will cause people to see that there still is a problem with how females are portrayed in media.
LOL at "i hope she can use those funds to surround herself...". Over 150k to make youtube videos? Please.
But honestly my only real problem with what Sarkeesian did was play this huge victim card with the project. Yes, a bunch of middle and high school little boys made absurd comments and threats to her (btw this has never happened in internet history ever). She claims she normally deletes these comments with her other videos, but kept them up this time for this kickstarter....to me it comes across as asking for sympathy money. I dont think that is very....ethical.
To be honest I wish more women would actually enter computer science and try and make their own games that depict women and men the way they want. It would probably be better for the industry as a whole and create more ideas. Roberta Williams is a legend in my book and would easily make it into my "video game hall of fame".

This would be much better than trying to force developers to cater to a very small demographic of video gamers.

More people looked at Kickstarter and just so happened to see the feminist one out of the thousands of projects on there that day than the other one. This could be anything from their system of essentially ransom sorting to maybe the other one got picked as an editors choice on a particularly high traffic day.
The feminist one became more of a news sensation for various reasons, probably to do with the violent response to it while the other one just seems like a good cause, I don't imagine many are getting up in arms about it and therefore it isn't as much of a story.
Kickstarter historically has huge last days for projects, and the feminist one is over while the other one still has ten days left to continue earning.
I'd keep going, but you're just going to say 'whoosh' anyway so why bother? The point is, everyone in the world didn't see both projects and make a conscious decision to only heavily fund one. At best this says something about the incredibly small fanbase that Kickstarter can claim out of the entire internet. It's one hell of a stretch to apply that to society as a whole.
I hadn't heard of the Banks one prior to this topic, and I'd only heard about the feminist one because it became something of a sensation for the reaction it received and got put on news websites. Call me a white knight, but I imagine that might have just a little bit to do with this.
From: GaryOak151 | #107 can someone show me feminist support for banks accuser after it was admitted to be false
everyone keeps saying it but i don't really believe it I'd have to assume it's because it doesn't exist. Support DURING the trial however would be expected. \
I mean we can talk about what is worse between being falsely accused and actually being raped, but it's wholly irrelevant. The fact remains that over half of rapes go unreported. People are afraid of the spotlight that comes out of most rape trials and a lot of people don't think it's worth it to go through the ordeal for the chance to have the person arrested. Nobody should be afraid to tell someone when they have been assaulted, but if someone is unable to prove a rape has occurred (and it's quite hard after some time has passed), they're going to be seen as a liar whether or not they were telling the truth.
It's a terrible thing when an innocent person goes to prison, no one other than a few radicals (who everyone seems to assume speak for all feminists) is arguing against this. But false rape accusations are "swept under the rug" because they are a very small percentage of all rape cases and a much smaller issue than rape which goes unpunished.

You know, I haven't read this whole thing and I'm sure somebody has already brought this up, but it bears repeating anyway.
Getting all judgmental about what people choose to donate their own money to is a very dangerous road to walk down. Because let's face it, in the grand scheme of things, some stupid movie about some stupid football player doesn't really matter AT ALL. If you're going to judge, the least you could do is demand that people give to starving children in Africa or something.

Starving children in Africa don't deserve my money.
Malaria nets and deworming gives more quality adjusted life years per dollar donated; what starves children in Africa is neither lack of funding nor lack of food. It's simple logistics. The charity organizations simply aren't organized well enough (or the environment isn't conducive enough) for the food to get to the kids.
People just aren't interested in what purpose their money is put toward see. They just want to show off "see! I'm a feminist/anti feminist/compassionate soul" etc. etc. etc.

so is the argument "it's okay for people to occasionally be punished for crimes they didn't commit because the victims of those crimes are far more numerous?"
otherwise I'm not clear on what you're saying
in any case it's a situation with few good outcomes. you can punish false accusations but then the accusers will never admit they were lying and the falsely accused will never get their sentences overturned. unless you find hard evidence that the accuser is lying, I guess. which seems tough with rape because how do you prove that someone didn't rape someone else?
Is this a joke? Are we seriously comparing a guy spending the most precious years of his life in prison on a FALSE charge to some boring "internet celebrity" whining about people "trolling" her?
Also, she's not attractive. She's average looking. But there are guys desperate enough to fall for that because white knighting makes them feel like they're worth something. Sad.

I don't think ACTUALLY GIVING MONEY to a feminist cause qualifies as white knighting.
Allow me to put on my realo mask for a second and inform you guys that our society is filled with feminist propaganda. I have no doubt for one second that there are PLENTY of guys out there who completely agree with this woman that everything in the world is sexist and biased. It's a logical consequence of spending your entire life listening to propaganda. They aren't white knighting to win her approval, they actually agree with her.

Yes, that chick got boatloads of money because she's a cute 'gamer chick'. It's been going on for decades, whatever.
No, that doesn't really matter in a topic like this where you have a real life person screwed over due to a false accusation in something that deserves more airtime.
Short version, this is the first kickstarter I will put money in.

The only thing I will say is that I hope everyone that says this Anita woman will use all her money to forward her cause is actually joking. It does not matter whether she is white or black, male or female, I doubt she will use that $158k effectively because she is a human being, and human beings are corrupt. I would be incredibly surprised if she puts all of it towards her cause. Seriously she makes youtube videos, you couldn't spend 158k on that **** if you tried.

You know, I hadn't actually thought about the consequences that come with punishing a false accuser for later admitting it. That does make the situation trickier since it is better that they admit the truth at all rather than encouraging them to keep it hidden to avoid punishment.

I would hope that no one who opens a kickstarters feels "entitled" to the money, no matter how good the cause or how little the money in relation to other projects.

It's not hard. The argument is that while both things are terrible (being raped, and being falsely accused of rape) we should not focus on false accusations because it may only work to hinder people from reporting rape, as when stories like this get big they often cause more people to look at rape accusations with suspicion which really isn't what we should be doing.
It's kind of like making a big deal about those committing welfare fraud. Sure there are some people doing it, but the number of those taking advantage of the system shouldn't be a cause to cut funding for welfare because there are still a lot of people who truly do need it.
The story is sad no doubt, but getting people to look at accusations of rape with more suspicion is literally the worst thing that could come out of this, and it is also one of the most likely.
The thing is, false rape accusations are incredibly rare. MRAs like to pretend they're a serious problem, but they just aren't.
On the other hand, sexism and misogyny permeate every aspect of our culture.
I know I'm just jumping into the conversation here, but two things:
1) Sexism is more prevalent, but false rape accusations are more damaging.
2) False rape accusations are, unfortunately, fairly common. I have no idea what "MRA" is, so I'm speaking from personal experience here: one of my better friends was almost thrown out of university last semester on just this kind of false charge. The real story, of course, was that the chick wanted a one-night stand but expected a more serious relationship later, and, after feeling "used," decided to go on an inexcusable smear campaign. Thankfully, the evidence was so overwhelmingly against this slut that nothing major came of it (other than his reputation being permanently damaged), but I cannot overstate the seriousness of this kind of charge.

Let me see if I understand this correctly: we shouldn't condemn false rape accusations- accusations which can permanently ruin a person's life and, for the moment, come with no serious repercussions for the false accuser- because this will discourage people from reporting actual rapes? Not only do I find that correlation highly specious, but even were it true, you're saying that it's okay to scapegoat innocent men in order to promote the reporting of rapes. That's... yeah.
