From: _Regaro_ | #049 I guess I'll have to track down whoever told me P2 was bad and call them a liar Do that. Seriously, P2's amazing.
As someone who's played all of the games represented in that delightful diagram (except for SMT1), I'd have to say it's close to accurate. From a gameplay perspective, anyway. Though I'd bump Devil Survivor above Persona.
Storywise, though? Mainline SMT > all of them. SMT > Devil Survivor > Persona > DDS.

Of what I've played of the series: Persona >>>>> Devil Survivor >> DDS > Nocturne/SJ. I need to play the Devil Summoner games still. Nothing's topping Persona for me out of the SMT stuff though.
Yeah I think Persona's the best subseries as well but I don't think the gap is nearly as big between the series. Devil Summoner, at least the PS2 games, are the weakest link although they're still alright games to play.
You know what I just realized....... this basically confirms the Persona 3DS game announced when the 3DS was first revealed
I mean for the longest while we've just seen "unannounced Shin Megami Tensei" and "unannounced Shin Megami Tensei: Persona", and as time passed I thought it was just making stuff up that isn't actually being made - or maybe was canned. Heck, Atlus also had "unannounced Etrian Oddyssey" back then too. ATLUS Etrian Odyssey Shin Megami Tensei Shin Megami Tensei: Persona Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor
Hand held Persona is the worst due to battery life. The 3DS Persona is probably just going to be a port. I'm not sure which game since they're all on PSP/Vita now, but maybe it'll be a P5 port a year or so after the game comes out.

So (If you're on a 3DS), just don't use the 3D Effects? That'll save a good deal of battery life right there.
I'm of the opinion that jRPGs should be primarily designed with handhelds in mind, not consoles. The genre as a whole is basically a perfect fit for the handheld style.
Even with settings on low they don't tend to last too long. I'd much rather play JRPGs on consoles since I tend to easily put 80+ hours into every one of them. It also helps I like playing consoles a lot more.
The thing is, you can put over 100 hours into something on a handheld (I put 98 into Devil Survivor over the course of about a month and a half, which is by far the most I've put into an individual game just to clear everything, I think). You don't have to play the game in one sitting, and I very rarely sit down and play a game for more than an hour or two at a time.
And then on top of that
Car Trips. You can take them on Car Trips and put in a few hours like that.
I still put a lot of hours into handhelds. When I play games I tend to play for long periods of time and handhelds usually don't cut it for that unless you plug them into the wall all day. I'm usually never on car trips long enough to be worth playing anything either. It'd be nice if JRPGs had the funding to be on console and handheld to give people a choice. I'm still hoping Atlus will do an HD P3P/P4G release since I'd enjoy playing them a lot more on a console.
I have to agree with swordz, for long RPGs I'd rather play them on consoles for ease of use and comfort.
Handheld RPGs are nice and they can work very well (they're great for lower budget titles, which are most JRPGs these days) but just overall I'd rather have it on a console.
That said I'm not going to throw a fit or anything if Persona 5 is on a handheld, because then it would clearly be designed with that in mind.
I guess I'm a weird case, if your opinion is popular
Real-Time Combat, like Elder Scrolls, I can definitely understand preferring on a console. But when the "Gameplay" is (mostly) strategically choosing attacks through a menu, like SMT, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, etc?
Graphics aside (And even those are pretty good on handhelds, these days), I just see no good reason to play it on a console. The flexibility of not being stuck in my chair while I play, combined with the fact that I don't play for more than a couple hours at a time usually, is a huge part of that too though.
It's just a matter of comfort preference. Some JRPGs work really well on handhelds because they don't have time consuming non-gameplay content. Pokemon is a perfect example of that. I'd much rather play one of those on a handheld than a JRPG with long scenes and dungeons with saving restrictions. Those can be kind of annoying on battery life.
Between this and the Soul Hackers update, it's nice to see that Atlus isn't totally ignoring its core/older fans to chase after idiot hipster anime bull**** "fans".

From: mnkboy907 | #077 Looks like whatever impending disaster you usually have to stop already happened, and this takes place in the aftermath. That's actually the standard for the mainline SMT games. There just tends to be a bigger disaster on the way.

All games listed barring Persona 1 and the first two SMT's are great, though. I would hope that this one takes more cues from Nocturne than from SMT1 and 2.
