My opinion that casual gamers should never be taken into account during the design process is well-known enough, because the Wii's current state is a good referendum on what happens when a company cares about casual gamers.

I disagree, casuals should always be taken into account, but not the way they are now. There's too much focus these days on appealing to casual gamers and people who are bad at video games, rather then easing them into the game so that they are driven to improve and enjoy the game on the same level as the rest of us.

Yes, Super Mario Bros. was such a difficult game, so many broken controllers and hurt feelings.

Oh wait, it was actually really f***ing easy and is one of the best selling games of all time.

As someone who loves hard games, the notion that games should have to be difficult to be enjoyed, or that people who don't enjoy difficult games shouldn't even bother, is really really dumb.

agreed.

But there is a **** ton more money in the casual market right now, or at least in 06 till around 09. Its a fickle group though, which makes me think that if the casual market loses interest, gaming could have a crash. Maybe not 1983 bad, but still pretty bad. Hell, gaming sales are down across the board in 2011 aside from a few elite titles released in november (skyrim, CoD for example) that terrorized, and i am pretty sure they are still down in these first 2 and a half months of 2012.

Gaming exploded around 2005/2006 due to the current gen taking off. It was the first gen that had significant online play and marketplaces (for consoles), and marketed to casuals (mainly the wii). These created untapped markets. But just like all untapped markets, you also create a period of boom and drop (possibly bust) imo. See the .com bubble around 2000/2001. We are starting to see a decline in sales.

Mobile phones and aps are the wild card in all this. I think they are the future of the casual market, as they are cheaper and more convenient. Console gaming (and possibly handhelds) could go back into a more niche community, assuming the companies create more consoles.

Bioware fanbase is terrible yes but not in the same way as the Sonic or MLP fanbase.

Like Bioware fans see Bioware as some kind of deity and worship it as a God that can do no wrong, but fortunately they don't go creating all this awful and disgusting content (mostly fanfictions and porn) like Sonic and MLP fans do.

Sure there is porn and fanfics of Bioware games, but much much less than Sonic crap and the amount of terrible MLP content is rising at an astonishing rate.

Seriously go on Deviantart and type the name of your favorite game + Pony.

And weep.

To be fair, Deviantart can ruin anything.

If video games are concerned with being difficult they will never advance as an art/cultural form. If a game is not fun for someone that's not great at it, then that's questionable game design, IMO.

SMB3 is not exactly horrendously difficult (and as far as I'm aware was not a tie-in?) and it sold quite well.

As for the TC, HoN.

Just... HoN. For anything to come remotely close to the HoN community it would have to resemble a circle of video gaming hell, because I swear to god this is the circle of hell where ragers get sent and the underworld administration wanted to try to make some money on top of that project.

Maybe I'm just old, but no one really cared about casuals during the NES/Genesis/TG-16/SNES says and those systems did fine.

Have you played an NES game lately? They were brutal and we loved every second of it. Do games even have game over screens anymore?

Gaming was also much less common and widespread than it is now.

Putting aside that the whole "hardcore vs casual" thing is a really silly dichotomy, the ideal situation is to break away from the current trend where too many games try to be huge budget affairs that try to target everyone and only manage a shallow satisfaction for each player (balanced out by indie games that ten people play) and focus on targeting specific audiences. Some games should be made that will be easy and accessible for people, because gaming is not an easy thing to get into (we tend to overlook that because we've grown up with it, for a newer person figuring out what the hell they're looking at, especially in first person games, doesn't usually come instantly) and we need new blood to keep the industry working. Some games should be made that will be challenging, aimed at gamers who want something that will give them a tough time without bending over to sort of appeal to newer players. Difficulty and accessibility should be treated like mixing genres - don't make games so expensive that they only succeed if everyone buys them, make cheaper and more frequent games that know which group they're going to appeal to.

again, those games don't sell as well anymore. The west guides the industry now, and we like our games easy to boost our self esteem. Then we blame something being imbalanced when we get owned in the online play.

I also feel that the change in gaming is a product of the times in a way nobody has mentioned too much of. Due to the troubling economy and overall more hectic lives of people, perhaps gaming has gotten easier because people don't want to be challenged when they play games right now.

Back when the economy was much better in say, the boom the personal computer caused and the boom the rise of the internet caused...people were much happier with work and their finances, thus people wanted more challenging and thought provoking games.

Just a thought i suppose.

Personally speaking, I'll say the Yukkuri abuse sub-fandom of Touhou fandom as my personal worst (with bronies, BioWare and SNOIC equally ranking right behind). To spare you the psychopathy, sociopathy, Lovecraftian madness and Internet tough guy-ness that lies there, I'll just quote someone else on a site I can't link here:

"Didn't you realize? This is the new age of sociopathic entertainment for insecure, spiteful children. Their kind used to torture animals in the past (kittens, puppies, little birds, technically everything that was harmless, cute and able to visibly and audibly react to pain). The whole Yukkuri thing is new, and it's the embodiment of their ideal - sentient, cute beings with human emotions, able to feel pain and cry, clumsy and virtually defenseless, easy to breed and torture both physically and psychically. No guts and gore, just bean paste. No retribution for the torture, nobody cares about the "manjuu". It's like a dream: even the biggest coward and mommy's boy can be "****ing hardcore" online, watching "anon" induce pain for no reason, feeling superior for a little while and talking big on the internet. Burning cats with gasoline is messy, disciplinable, smells like **** and you need at least a little bit of guts, a cat and some free space. Burning impaled yukkuri babies in front of their tied mother is easier than picking your nose - it's imaginary."

Even worse, discussing the morality of such is grounds for freaking serious business.

Also: I don't know how weight is relevant to making games, unless you're making DDR or a Wii waggle game...which Bioware isn't. When you make games you...sit at a computer and type. One of the best programmers I've ever worked with literally looks like Notch (to the point that people were coming up to him and congratulating him at GDC last year--it was pretty funny).
