anyway, boasting about being "colorblind" is nothing to be proud of. racial equality doesn't mean that everyone is a carbon copy of each other. the point of racial equality is that everyone has the same inherent natural rights and capacity for growth, while at the same time also having their unique cultures and histories.
Are you dumb? Don't try to answer that, I don't want you to hurt yourself.

On a serious note, though, am I the only one who feels kind of conflicted about black history month?

On one hand, the accomplishments of black people have been pretty routinely swept under the rug for many, many years in the US, and that s*** needs to be set right, so on that front good for black history month.

On the other hand, the whole thing kind of carries this tone of "oh look, black people invented stuff and did important things too, isn't that just amazing?" and I can't help but think people should find it ridiculously condescending sometimes.

Ideally white history and black history would really just be history, but I realize we've already f***ed that one up pretty good.

Yeah, but it's not something you actively think about it. You just kind of accept it, feel bad about it, then stop thinking about it until someone brings it up, and then maybe you feel bad about it again.

I mean I guess some clinically depressed people might think about it constantly.

Fair enough, I just thought you could see the stupidity in your post without my help. Let me spell it out for you.

Equal rights was not a concept to me as a child, because as far as I was concerned there was no reason for anyone to be unequal to me, or vice versa. When you begin to draw attention to race and how different those around you are compared to yourself, your perceptions change. You draw a fine line in the sand between black and white. Even if you claim not to care about the color of another person's skin, it's still there in the back of your head. You begin to acknowledge race as a factor the second you're made to feel apologetic for the atrocities of people who aren't you just because you're of a certain skin color.

Closer, but not exactly what I'm trying to get at. The idea is that black history month, in my own experience, isn't about acknowledging that some people have different skin colors. Anyone can see that. It's all about the context it gives to race. Like, just for a ridiculous example, it is somehow remarkable that George Washington Carver created peanut butter. Not because peanut butter shook the foundation of the world, but because it was created by a black man, and that was considered extraordinary to my elementary school teachers.

Get it?

Black people were killing, raping, and selling other black people as slaves long before America, but as soon as whites got involved it's all the fault of them. People do terrible things to each other, all the time, throughout history regardless of race. Spaniards killed Native Americans, Europeans did too, white people owned slaves, so did black people, and there were white slaves too. Slavery sucked ass, nobody is disputing that, and nobody is for slavery today. At all. In the US at least. Well, maybe the south. I'm pretty sure my family was hardly well to do off enough to own slaves, so I'm not guilty about anything I didn't do, or even my family didn't do, or that my 'race' has done in the past. Out of all the terrible things races have done to each other, I can't believe this is the one thing that has to keep getting dregged up over and over. I thought we were trying to be equal these days, but as long as African Americans born today are filled to the brim with white-hate telling them how awful the white people are, and how we deserve to feel guilty and have to 'make up' for it, we won't be.

With that 'all races have done bad stuff' line of thought, why does race matter? It's these same people talking about how awful white people are that still talk about equality, when that is obviously inequality. A lot of things are racially motivated, but we should look past that and punish the actions. Just like today, when a racially motivated crime or anti-gay crime happens they go to great lengths to determine if it's a 'hate crime'. Who cares? We have laws on the books for this sort of thing, it's called assault. Go directly to jail.

As shocking as the ignorance and racism in this topic is, it's not as bad as the idea that people should be held responsible for things they had no action in due to events beyond their control many years ago.

Which, as it happens, is based on the exact same kind of logic racism itself is: prejudice.

Hell, it's practically racism itself.

Ignore as in deny that it ever happened? No.

Ignore as in don't dedicate a month to teaching white children why they should feel guilty for being white? Absolutely.

Like, I'm not trying to advocate retconning history itself to eliminate the concept of racism, but we don't need a month dedicated to adults teaching young children that they should feel apologetic about what happened.

I mean, there is literally no other conflict in history that evokes this kind of reaction. Not even WW-f***ing II. Can you imagine if they made Japanese-American students feel like s*** about Pearl Harbor? People would go insane.
