I don't dislike any Mario 64 courses, but Tiny-Huge Island and Wet-Dry World are definitely not anywhere near the bottom.

Snowman's Land is probably the worst

I agree this far in 100%. DDD low tier I can sorta see but red coins and 100 coins alone make it worthwhile IMO. Better than Jolly Roger Bay at least. BOB low tier, though, what the hell?

I'm so confused by this topic.

Tiny Huge Island is a candidate for best level.
Wet Dry world is a candidate for best level.
Tic-Tock clock is a candidate for best level.
Shifting Sand Land is...certainly upper tier; I'd probably call it the best level in the basement.

If you want a bad world, look at like...Jolly Roger Bay, Rainbow Ride, Dire Dire Docks, And...hmm...Big Boo's Haunt now that I think about it (lots of special-case BS in that level like insta-death coffins and sequential book triggers. Neat concepts, but they just don't work that well).

Agree on the level, not so much on the music (still awesome though).

I think that a big reason why JRL succeeds as a water level are the submarine/BT swim/attack mechanics compared to SM64 though (submarine/aerial egg throw was a god-send compared to BK).

For some reason I've never been able to explain, I always kinda-liked Tall Tall Mountain. I've never been able to back up that gut feeling with anything concrete, though, and there's certainly lots of things wrong with it. (The monkey just in general. The missing collision that lets you fall inside the mountain and swim, the multiple stars ending in the same place and making you do slightly different things when you got there).

Well...yeah, all the stars where you can bypass the carpets altogether are pretty cool. But the carpet-required stars are the worst in the game.

I find damn near all of them more memorable than...any OoT dungeon barring maybe the Forest Temple, and most SMG levels. I mean, granted, I'm inclined to say SMG2 > SMG > SM64 overall. But SMG was very good at making memorable levels that stood out from each other and played different from each other.

(With one or two exceptions like Snowman's Land, yes).

While I vastly prefer the physics of SM64, I've never been a fan of the "more memorable" argument. Level design in 64 was FAR more about exploration than it was in the Galaxies, and that means you are spending more time in each level, and more time in the same places in each level, because it favored large hub levels over branching paths.

I agree completely with this assessment.

But so what? Mario 64 still had memorable levels. It doesn't have memorable action sequences or boss fights or enemies--the Galaxies are much, much better at those. But like...levels, in terms of raw geometry you can jump on and which will stick with you for years, kind-of what Mario 64 does.
