E-Mail #32: flag day

For how funny and poorly written as the Strong Badia national anthem is, I gotta say...it's kind of catchy. The flag itself is also awesome, and I'm surprised it hasn't been made into a metal band's logo yet. Strong Bad carving a Strong Badia tattoo into Strong Mad's shoulder is also pretty funny. This is just a good episode all around. The best one up to this point, in my opinion.

E-Mail #33: gimmicks

The Tandy explodes and sends careening through Strong Sad's wall. While that alone is pretty funny, what I find really hilarious is the e-mail Strong Bad was reading. The guy was actually complaining about the e-mails going different places and doing different things, as opposed to it being just Strong Bad answering e-mails. Yeah, remember those glorious episodes back in the day that lasted around 30 seconds and had one or two very bland, mediocre jokes? Sure miss those! The entire thing that ends up making the e-mails so funny are the gimmicks themselves. Good thing the Brothers Chaps didn't take these e-mails to heart.

Anyway, not bad.

E-Mail #34: weird dream

Seeing the continental United States in tight, white underwear is pretty, uh, interesting. Especially when it makes Texas look like a huge bulge (point?). It's a little funny, but not very, and certainly not as good as what we've been seeing lately. Though the joke from Strong Bad about The Cheat's computer having too much computer and not enough typewriter is decent. If I weren't against making a sham out of my star rating system, I'd be giving this one like a 1.75, but I'll just go ahead and round up to two.

E-Mail #35: sisters

I always used to (and still do) wonder about how the Tandy's screen got fixed the way it did. It certainly doesn't look, based on the episode it exploded, like it should be that fixed. It must have just been replaced or something. Anyway, the fixed up Tandy does things Strong Bad doesn't want it to do, and that's pretty funny, though it's one of those "you have to see it to enjoy its humor" sort of things.

E-Mail #36: guitar

The entire episode is based on the humor of Strong Bad's vocal interpretation of guitar noises, and that's just not very funny to me. Interesting that the thing he sings at the end becomes part of the Trogdor song, though.

The methods are funny, the little "Dullard" comic strip based on Dilbert in the corner is a nice touch (With the exact type of humor of that strip, too), and overall it's an enjoyable e-mail. Not much more to it than that.

E-Mail #38: helium

The Shack-Shaq joke at the beginning made me laugh more than it should of. Strong Bad's helium song lacked humor, but it was made up for with Strong Mad sounding exactly the same, and The Cheat balloon. The good definitely outweighs the meh in this episode.

The comments about the various towns he visits are all great. My particular favorite is Pantsburg (Simply for the line "[the bike] was, like, welded to that little house"), though Historic Over There is a close second. It's a fabulous episode that I think signifies that we're finally leaving the old era and entering the Golden Age. Let's just hope Tokugawa doesn't declare war on me.

E-Mail #42: action figure

It does a good job lampooning various dumb features you see action figures coming with, and the various other character figures at the end are kind of funny. But, it's just not above amusing to me. It's amusiveness, if you will, it's at medium scale.

E-Mail #43: little questions

It's kind of hard to follow everything being said and typed at once in this episode, but once you get everything that's happening, it's a pretty good episode. Making fun of poorly written English made by a Swedish person may be seen as too easy to some, but I figure differently. If something's funny, it usually doesn't matter what the subject is.

E-Mail #44: jigs and lures

As a sizable fan of fishing, fishing humor is right up my alley, and this is no exception. I wish it was as easy as doing a song and dance to get fish to jump into my boat. Then again, what I like about fishing is the relaxation of the whole thing, so maybe not. Still, it would be a nice way to make up for a day without a catch.

Also, the video game at the end is amusing.

Pouring oatmeal on stuff is probably the oddest goal in having a new hand I've ever heard. Especially on that poor, innocent turtle. But yeah, Strong Bad choosing a bucket and a megaphone over something cool or useful is odd. Doesn't make for incredible humor, but it's not a horrible episode.

Going over the average of my ratings so far, the first 47 episodes average a 1.94 out of 5. This isn't very good sounding, but this incorporates all the really lame early episodes. If we take a more recent sample, of, say, the last ten episodes, it averages a a much better 2.75 stars (Which, if you've been paying attention, out ranks the level of any episode prior to e-mail #28. So that should be a good indication that we're onto the good stuff now.

E-Mail #48: ghosts

The Strong Bad cave joke is predictable, yet still enjoyable. But really, what else would be the highlight here but the Tandy ghost? It's cute! The bad graphics ghost should be on a t-shirt. Not to mention if you "kill" the ghost at the end (Get rid of all the pixels; I used to have trouble with this for some reason, but a simply push of the Tab key does this with ease), Strong Sad sings a "spooky" song, which is actually kind of lullaby-like. I like it, just like I like the episode. Like like like. external image ?)

Things are OK in the beginning, but really pick up once that phone rings. Homestar's just a really funny character in short doses, and this is a good way of using that. Strong Bad possibly selling his brothers feet to someone is also amusing.

And the old-timey Easter egg is something I can always get behind. The old-timey jokes always get to me.

E-Mail #10: trevor the vampire

What I thought back then: Meh.

This episode is a little better than I remember it. I'm a fan of "they just died, here's all the memories they gave us" jokes, and so that works out in this episode's favor. Still, it's not like I'm clutching my sides, gasping for breath laughing. Not even an outloud chuckle...just kind of amusing. It has that over some of the others so far, though.

Just the description of what would happen in a standard cartoon is funny enough, but the whole Strong Bad/Homestar island scene is great.
