yeah, it's the magic stat. my numbers may be off by a bit, but should be pretty close to it if i'm wrong. dark matter's 15.5 x mag while luminaire is 20.5 x mag (flare's 17.25 and shock is 16.5), so that's the difference. it's possible that some are more resistant to an elemental type but doubt it. there's also some randomness involved in the formula, but Crono's stat is just really, really pitiful. Magus doubles him in that regard. you should've tried Flare out - it would've done more damage than Dark Matter normally because Lucca's stat is just a little higher than Magus', and Flare's a decent amount better as well.
while i'm doing this, i'm pretty sure dark bomb and dark mist are both 10.5s, and his __2 spells are 7.5. others are like... 5.75 on LV2 and 4.5 or 5 on LV1 i think. for them, LV2 really is a minor increase in damage + all hitting. for Magus, LV2 is as strong as some of their later techs. or any in Marle's case as she caps at Ice 2 (same for Frog, only he doesn't even have a good MAG to start, and he lacks physical techs too so uh...). and... i think even Ayla had a magic move on her that was ALSO surprisingly high on the damage. the giant dinosaur one? yeah. that's off her magic stat. which is why its damage always looked crappy. it's completely pitiful, but it's also stronger than Dark Matter, hilariously enough.
keep in mind, Mega Bomb from Lucca is still a great spell. it was better than what Magus had to offer and almost as good as Dark Matter. that's why it combo'd with Robo made Doublev Bomb such a goddamn powerful move (Robo's bomb attack is 2nd best in the tier 2 attacks - right behind Lucca's Mega Bomb) and Crono/Robo/Lucca is objectively the most powerful team you could make. Ayla's not a bad choice to replace Robo there, but it's just not as powerful is all.
volt bite i'm p. sure is based all off of ayla. falcon p. sure it's all crono. usually these things have a mix of both, but that's not the case with those two.
but basically, ranking goes: Ultimate magic attacks: Crono >> Lucca > Robo >= Ayla > Magus. (Luminaire, Flare, Shock, Dino something, Dark Matter). neither Frog nor Marle have one.
2nd tier spells: Lucca > Robo >> Magus (Mega Bomb, something Bomb, Dark Bomb/Dark Mist - same power to both). nobody else has one (Crono goes Physical here, Ayla just randomly did that 'spell,' and lol water element).
...and Magus doesn't really drop out of that point when it comes to magic. i don't think there's anything comparable to Magus' LV2 spells so he just sits there kinda comfortably in that spot while everything else goes under him. he's deceptively strong but after a 2nd run or you're more experienced with the game you realize he kinda sucks. <__<;
and any changes to the above are done entirely because of stats and rng.

Wow Wang, I think you rival Sytha in your attention to gaming detail.
I just beat Lavos at the very beginning of the game with only Crono and Marle (after first returning from 600 AD). I thought I'd get a super early ending, but I'm back at the festival like nothing happened. lol wut? Can I still play through the rest of the game?

oh there's very few games i know intimately well like CT. i've just played it too much. and yep, Lavos is the one you can accidentally stumble upon. i feel slightly bad for the person who goes 'ooh a shiny object!' after Marle gets time warped and then they end up fighting Lavos with just Crono by accident.
and that question answered itself within those 4 minutes i assume. one of the best endings too.

Dino Tail? How exactly does that work, anyway? I know it does more damage the lower Ayla's HP is, but what exactly is the formula for that?
ah, my bad. Tail Spin, just looked it up. not sure how the math goes for the less HP = more damage moves honestly. mainly because they're kind of a waste. >>;

I haven't played in a couple days, but I'll pick it up soon to at least get a few more endings and aim for the higher character levels.
I've been wondering: I know CT wasn't that huge in the US initially and gained more popularity alongside emulation. Knowing that, when did you guys first play the game, and was it on the SNES, PS1, PC, or DS?

Really? I mean, even I remember an ad or two in Nintendo power, but I thought it only sold a couple hundred thousand here. Compared to the Nintendo games that sold millions, that's barely a ripple.

'PC version', around... I wanna say 1999 as I remember I was like 10 and I sort of remember going 'oh hey the world is going to end this year according to the game!'
I don't think CT was -too- popular when it released in 1995, but a couple years later, when FF7 was released, it caused a bit of a surge in demand for most of the SNES Squaresoft RPGs, including CT. Then, of course, with Cross's release, CT experienced another Serge in demand.

"Ah, a party! We haven't had one of those. So...what is a party?" "Well, you drink punch and eat CAKE! ...I think."
Case in point, the game is not rare at all, (one-star ranking for rarity out of five on sites I've looked at) despite selling for such high prices over time.
It's only hard to find because lots of people have it and no one's selling, because it's so good!

My first exposure to it was the Playstation version. I think it's telling just how good the game is that I endured it and loved the game despite those horrific loading times.
Chrono Trigger was very hyped by the media when it was released, at the very least. I distinctly remember GamePro doing a huge review and walkthrough for it when it came out and hailing it as one of the greatest games ever.
Didn't play it until it came out on PS1 with FF Chronicles though.

"I couldn't stand a day without a past or future. I need to live each moment to keep fighting here and now."
i loved Final Fantasy III/VI so much that i eagerly scoured every issue of my monthly Nintendo Power for information on Square's next great game: Chrono Trigger. I saved every penny and bought it the day it came out from Babbage's for $80. and it was worth every one of those pennies. although, i didn't unlock ALL of the endings until the PSX version came around. i only figured out 6 or 7 of the endings on my own on the SNES.

Yay - Black Turtle is the guru champion of awesomeness.
From: Shoenin_Kakashi | #275 I still want my CT anime, even though I know they'll inadvertently **** it up. Damn newer versions coming out with pretty nifty anime scenes.
I replayed a NG+ from an old file and started a new game from scratch.
They totally didn't make the game scale at mid/higher levels correctly, everyone's completely overtunned and enemies are hilariously undertuned. Speiko is like the only enemy tunned right, and even then he's kinda weaksauce most the time.
I also forget just how much of a crackhouse the Black Omen is. How many tabs can you get on just 1 run? I counted like 11

Nice catch BlAcK TuRtLe. But too bad your ass got SAAAAAAAAAAACKED.*tackles*
Problem is Im basically flipping the bird off to everything because they can't really dent me outside percentage attacks, and I explode them. I beat the game before the 50's and I think I could have done that well before. Only got as high as I did because I didnt run from any battle and just blazed through like a VOLTEKKAAAAAAAAA

I'm pretty bummed that FFVI/III isn't on the Virtual Console yet. I'd be playing it right now if it were.
Speaking of which, how is that game compared to Chrono Trigger? Is it bigger, more open-ended or linear, and is the battle system more/less complex or about the same?

I don't remember if there are any just lying around, but if you are charming:
- You can Max Power Tabs if you want, as you can re-fight Tubsters as much as you want. If you don't fight the same one multiple times, it's 4, I think. - There's 4 Aliens for Magic Tabs - And a ****load of Panels for Speed Tabs
Beat Lavos as soon as I reached The End of Time. Crono, Marle, and Lucca tore him apart. Marle was confused the last half of the battle, and it didn't even matter. For my efforts, I was treated to a staff roll (scored by the 12,000 BC track, one of the game's best) and a frog and Nu goofing around. Pretty weak, but progress nonetheless.
Total Endings Progress: 3/15

I'll probably buy the PS1 versions of VIII and IX (are there any changes in any re-releases?), but not right now. My PS2 isn't hooked up and probably won't be for a couple months.

From: LeonhartFour | #298 Also, FFVIII would have a good chance at beating FFVI in a contest match, so it'd be close to majority opinion...!
I think we are talking about the opinions of people who have played both games. Contest strength isn't entirely relevant as FFVIII has probably had many more players than FFVI
