Eh it's perfectly viable in 3 and tactics. It's not the beast that it is in FF1 but it's viable even through till endgame in both games (well, as viable as any non sage/ninja class is in FF3 endgame). In FF3 it gets some random lategame gear that you wouldn't expect it to be able to use and knows most of the spells like it does in FF1 iirc, and in tactics advance 1/2 as I said it gets twincast which is enough to make it worth having the hamstrung spell selection. Tactics advance is kinda laughably easy no matter what you use though.
