They made a critical mistake by actually going after Roe v. Wade. Their base is unintelligent enough that they would have been perfectly content with just being paid lip service until the end of time, but by actually repealing it, the GOP has galvanized the other side at no benefit to themselves. The fact is, there are right-wing Christian Nationalist organizations who truly do believe in this shit and they're the ones who were funneling judicial picks to the GOP. Regardless of how a GOP lawmaker actually wanted the wind to blow, the people they were hiring were cultivated by a group who sincerely wanted to one day make this our reality.
