There was a good long period of maybe a decade where GameStop was going so hard on pre-orders that they would intentionally under stock new games so that if you tried to buy it on release day they would tell everyone they were sold out and they should have pre-ordered.

Beyond artificial scarcity though, you do get the occasional nonsense like that one Arkham games where an entire side story was a pre-order bonus.
Never knew that but it makes sense in hindsight why something like Brawl wouldn't have been in-stock.

I remember buying Brawl on release and they told me I should have preordered and something like a $5 charge to do so... went right across the street to Toys R Us and they had plenty.

Personally, I don't see the point unless you want that lame preorder bonus these days for most titles, some games don't even let you preload.
