And iirc, custodians undergo the same augmentations as astartes? Custodes undergo a very different process and the end result is stronger. I don't think there was ever any mention of it being incompatible with women. The lore is always changing, so there isn't some consistent lore, but Custodes we're usually the sons of former nobility.
