US's protection of Israel in the UN has been brought up before as a form of leverage it has with Israel that it has pretty much refused to exercise so far. The ideal solution wouldn't be to just cut off diplomatic relations with Israel but to use the fact that the US provides it with so much stuff to convince Israel to behave better.
