We went to church for the first 7 or 8 years of my life, and just sort of stopped. My mom grew up in a family of Baptist preachers, but my mom and dad were never as strict about it as them.

But then my aunt went through a goth phase, and my mom freaked out and went weirdly fundamentalist. She started calling everything evil out of the blue, and wouldn't let me watch anything with dragons or demons. This lasted only a year, and she went back to relatively normal.

In hindsight, I think she started losing her faith in religion while falling out with the older members of her hateful family, and that was sort of her reaction to it. Now she can't stand organized religion, and leans harder left than she did when I was a kid.
