Honestly, I think the idea that the patrons of restaurants should pay the bulk of a server's wages is absolute bullshit. It's also a bullshit excuse that better servers will get paid for better service, because the initial post disproves that.
However, as a patron, if you know the deal going in, you tell the server that they provided excellent service and you still give them a shit tip, you are the asshole.
Don't even get me started on what it would take to get a certain party to actually go along with giving restaurant workers a living wage that's not absolutely dependent upon tips...
