Kinda wild how this one seems so similar to the first case that happened in 94. McDonald's also just recently found itself in trouble because a kid was burned with chicken nuggies. When is McDonald's gonna start learning the lesson that they shouldn't be serving food that can disfigure people?

McDonalds had long ignored safety regulations, preferring to pay fines to the FDA instead of change how they do business. The FDA was limited in how much they could fine McDonalds, so there was no real way to punish them.

The FDA had been itching for a lawsuit to be brought forth against McDonalds so that they could properly punish them for thumbing their nose at regulation standards. However McDonald's usually paid off its victims before it goes to trial, like the one where a toddler got third degree burns to her face after too hot coffee was spilled on her.

The FDA sort of lucked out with the elderly woman's lawsuit and got the court to punish the corporation through her. However, McDonalds successfully pleaded the reward down to peanuts and buried the plaintiff's reputation in the press. Then they went back to business as usual.
