Maybe this is obvious, but:
- If you hardly drive, be sure to tell your insurance company. You can get a low mileage discount.
- If you have a second car, live near public transportation, or rideshares, you may not need coverage that pays for a rental car while your car is being repaired.
- Live in a state with positive or "good driving" points, so a minor ticket won't make you go negative.
- Don't get tickets. If you do get tickets, take a safe-driving course.
- Adjust your deductibles to strike a balance between what you can afford to pay outright and what you'd need help paying.
- Be older.
- Drive a sleeper.
