I honestly just use plant milks for everything where I would need milk. Used to use soy, but that was a bit thick for my tastes. I usually use almond with occasionally using oat. I would use oat milk all the time, but it is too expensive.

Actual milk and even the lactose free stuff just tastes like lard dissolved in water to me now.

Try other brands of soy. I've never had the thickness issue with it that you describe. Soy (or pea) really is the only suitable alternative to dairy.

Oat and almond milk are essentially expensive sugar water (almond being water intensive and diluted sugar water) devoid of any real nutrition. One might as well be drinking soda.

And if someone is only using it as a splash in coffee or tea, just go for non dairy creamer.
