I would generally rush forward the moment I was strong enough to beat a given area, and would only level when I had trouble. It wasn't until FF3 (FFVI) where I played for 16 hours and got stuck on the Floating Island because I was too weak to go forward and there was no way back (and everything was too strong to level off of), and had to completely start the game over that I started taking power-leveling more seriously.
