Prefer asymmetrical, but always wanted try this setup. Anyone have experience with this controller?

Yeah. It was pretty comfortable, but the WiiU didn't really have many shooters or other games where the default position is to have a thumb on each stick, so the potential benefit of having both sticks in the more neutral positions was kind of wasted.

It mostly comes down to trying to aim and run while swapping items, like moving the camera to keep track of Valstrax in monster hunter while trying to heal yourself. Or swapping weapons while keeping track of everything around you while stealth in MGSV. I think since dpad and face buttons are almost never used together, whereas both joysticks are often used all the time depending on the game, my brain finds it easier when joysticks are horizontally aligned with each other and buttons+dpad are also aligned.

If I end up in a situation like that in MH, I usually swap to a pseudo-claw position anyway so I can hit everything I need, so I can't say that asymmetrical sticks really hurt it because any semblance of ergonomic sensibility has already gone out the window. I guess my MH time has been roughly split between symmetrical and asymmetrical sticks (Wii classic controller pro for Tri, WiiU pro controller for 3U, Switch pro controller or handheld mode for GU), and I never really noticed a difference. I can see how it might require a bit of mental gymnastics for some, though.
