I don't care as long as it isn't whatever the hell Nintendo was trying with the Wii U, where they were symmetrical but high instead of low.

Depends on the game, specifically on whether the default position for the right thumb is to be on the face buttons or right stick. Ideally, whichever is used more should be on top, since it's a more neutral position. For most games I play, asymmetrical works better. The WiiU's configuration actually made the most sense for shooters and other games where you spend most of your time using both sticks at once, but then the system didn't exactly have many shooters, so that potential was kind of wasted.

Honestly, I'm fine with either the XBox or PS designs, and it really just depends on which one I'm using more at any given time. ie, if I'm playing a lot of PS games and then switch to the XBox the XBox controller feels weird, but if I've been playing a lot of XBox games and then switch to the PS the PS controller feels weird. It just takes a little bit of adjustment time to get back into the groove.

The only "modern" controllers where I absolutely loathe the stick placement is the N64 and the Gamecube. Those are ones I feel like were crafted in the bowels of Hell solely to annoy.

How you feel about the issue might depend pretty strongly on just what sort of games you're playing.

Basically, this from the other topic. Which stick placement is "better" mainly depends on what sort of games you're playing (and whether or not you're focusing more on the right stick or the right controller buttons), though I don't think it makes enough of a difference either way for me to really care.

Asymmetrical because it allows you to hold the controller in the most natural way possible in most games. Symmetrical joysticks only make sense for games that use the D-Pad as the primary input method for movement.

Not everybody has tiny hands, so it's kind of hard to not have your thumbs hit the joysticks. Holding it "properly" when you have large hands is a one way ticket to carpal tunnel town.

@Krazy_Kirby IDK how the hell you took that 2nd pic but my hands are a similar size and I can assure you that it's a problem for me. I have to bend by thumbs into an awkward position to keep them from hitting each other.

On the other hand, plenty of games these days (especially FPSs and first-person RPGs) put the camera on the right stick, so you'll be spending a lot of time using both sticks simultaneously anyway. And if primary game input is the triggers and you're only using the right buttons for specialized controls, you'll actually be using the right stick way more than the right buttons (and in that sense, it's not that different from games that add separate contextual commands to the D-Pad).

No preference so long as they are designed well. The dualshocks and switch pro are both good. They're far better than the old-school controllers I grew up with.

My only real modern controller gripe is when games tie something annoying to L3/pressing in the joystick (like crouching in Breath of the Wild) and don't let you swap it out.

It mostly comes down to trying to aim and run while swapping items, like moving the camera to keep track of Valstrax in monster hunter while trying to heal yourself. Or swapping weapons while keeping track of everything around you while stealth in MGSV. I think since dpad and face buttons are almost never used together, whereas both joysticks are often used all the time depending on the game, my brain finds it easier when joysticks are horizontally aligned with each other and buttons+dpad are also aligned.

This probably isn't really a common complaint lol. I feel like dual sticks act like my legs in a game, so if they aren't symmetrical I have to put a lot more thought into my actions instead of just flowing.

Yeah. It was pretty comfortable, but the WiiU didn't really have many shooters or other games where the default position is to have a thumb on each stick, so the potential benefit of having both sticks in the more neutral positions was kind of wasted.

If I end up in a situation like that in MH, I usually swap to a pseudo-claw position anyway so I can hit everything I need, so I can't say that asymmetrical sticks really hurt it because any semblance of ergonomic sensibility has already gone out the window. I guess my MH time has been roughly split between symmetrical and asymmetrical sticks (Wii classic controller pro for Tri, WiiU pro controller for 3U, Switch pro controller or handheld mode for GU), and I never really noticed a difference. I can see how it might require a bit of mental gymnastics for some, though.
