Why did we invent this dumb s*** Mostly because the fantasy of being able to become powerful through hard work instead of having to rely on birthright, good fortune, or other factors outside of one's own control was appealing enough to get people on board with it. Left out of that fantasy is the part where hard work alone never actually enables anyone to become powerful without adding in other factors outside of one's control, including birth, but it's still a marginal upgrade over "I'm the king and you never will be," so people cling to that vain hope that maybe they'll end up being one of the lucky ones. --- This is my signature.
