Well that was the most natural way of reading it for kid me with Indonesian as my native tongue anyway.
Yeah, this makes sense. I think it might be the case that native english speakers from the anglosphere countries are more used to seeing french phonemes get tossed around here and there so something like 'voir' is less likely to be tricky - we've seen and heard the term 'film noir' enough, for instance, to make that rhyming connection, or something like the french "voila!"
