Nothing personal Doe, you seem thoughtful, but these are the snobbiest posts in this thread. It takes a lot of ego and naivety to invalidate black and white movies or old movies relative to their counterparts.
I dont think I ever invalidated older films, i questioned whether more recent filmmakers were being disregarded for choices that, while foundational or influential, also represent a time when access to the skills, tools, capital and distribution to produce a film were far more limited.

I have nothing against black and white films by nature. I love The Man Who Wasn't There, a 2001 film. I respect Metropolis for its production and vision of sci fi set pieces even though the version I watched was way too long.

I believe that film is an evolving conversation just like with literature and that many modern filmmakers have been able to learn from and improve on works from much of the 20th century when the medium was in its cradle.

All that said, it has been pointed out that there is something of a normal distribution present with the oldest and newest films making either tail, so my first impression scrolling through the list was a little hasty.
