Reading a plot synopsis makes it very obvious why it's the top spot, and also a film I'd never voluntarily see.

Haven't seen 1 or 7 so I have some new movies to watch!

I'm glad Spirited Away is on there.

I haven't seen 33 overall. Might check out some of the others.

And yeah the love for Mulholland Drive is weird to me. I mean it's a good movie but I don't get why it's now elevated so extremely above Lynch's other stuff. Then again I haven't seen it in over a decade. I might get more out of it nowadays.

a lot of people thought it could possibly get the top spot. it is the consensus lynch pick (since these things have lots of politicking in the voting - you vote for your fav director's most popular movie instead of your personal fav) and with s&s polling somewhere between 800-1,000 more new critics (many of whom would be millennials), it made sense to see it make a huge leap.

same with in the mood for love and beau travail.

there are more movies in the top ten made between 1998-2001 than made between 1898-1950 lol

given the push to add more women, i'm surprised elaine may didn't manage a top 100 movie. although that might be just a lack of availability or maybe her vote was split between a new leaf and mikey and nicky.

coen bros, malick, and michael mann all failed to get into the top 100 as well.

cleo from 5 to 7 and meshes of the afternoon weren't on the 2012 list at all and debuted at 16 and 14 !!!

they probably had the vote split. you could argue that several movies are their masterpiece whereas many other directors have a very obvious pick to go with.

i'm sure when the individual ballots are released in the next week you'll see them get plenty of rep.

its not really contrarian if you were already a consensus top 35 movie ever made lol. maybe if it was brand new to the list but jeanne dielman was already canonized.

also everyone figured with the voter pool expansion including more women that many women filmmakers would go up. which did happen. claire denis managed also a top 10 film, agnes varda had two films very high, meshes of the afternoon made its debut VERY high, julie dash and celine sciamma got debuts (sciamma being a v embarrassing pick however).

no lina wertmueller or elaine may tho. akerman also had another top 100 film.

just realized no spielberg films made the top 100 lol

No Coen Bros, Spielberg, or PTA kinda does make the list look dumb af tbh. Wes too but I get that kinda. Though you'd think Grand Budapest Hotel would have been a shoe in.

it could be another split vote thing (pta and coens def dont have a consensus #1 movie yet) but it makes you wonder... i mean, doesn't spielberg have enough solidified masterpieces that they would show up on enough ballots anyway? not even jaws could get into the top 100????

Seven Samurai is 19 spots too low.

I feel like French new wave auteurs always get shafted on these lists outside of the big two and a token appearance or two from others, so it's nice to see Cleo from 5 to 7 so high up. I really love that movie. Now put some god damn Eric Rohmer on there.

i imagine the international critics will have ballots with some good recs from under represented nations!!

i've been trying to get more interested in south asian, middle eastern, and african films recently but its hard since there isn't much of a compass outside of the usuals like kiarostami/farhadi, rajamouli/ray, and sembene. not much canonized by criterion for example which has OVER SIXTY of the top 100 s&s movies in their collection. my god. people need to branch out.
