The batshit schedule is one of the reasons I refused to go back after I was furloughed. But as for the post-work time off, its federally regulated (at least in the US). For instance, for Norfolk Southern at least, if you were technically working on the clock for 24 hours (which Ive seen) youd get the required ten hours off plus an hour for every hour you exceed a 12 hour duty day. So 22 hours before you were allowed to work again. What sucks is that 22 hours might be sitting in a hotel and who knows when the next job is set to roll around again.
