I've gone to Magic Mountain dozens of times over the years and nothing has ever fallen out of my pockets, even on rides like X-2. But I've seen other people lose their phones on coasters. I'd say the fanny pack is a great idea if you don't mind wearing one. You could also do a backpack, but just be aware that you will have to store it on the side before every ride.
