| Doe 07/06/22 7:18:16 AM #25: | The nuclear weapons were used because 1) congress needed to justify the billions in unaccounted for research budget, and 2) Truman wanted Japan to surrender to the US to gain it as a strategic location, rather than Japan falling in the hands of the Soviet Union, a rising power with opposed ideology.
