no. a good portion of the time they're complaining it's actually legit.

This, so very much.

Being a fan doesn't mean being willing to swallow whatever feces they shovel at your face while smiling the whole time. Being a fan doesn't mean ignoring blatant problems and acting like a mindless drone showering creators with unearned positivity. Being a fan doesn't mean being morally obligated to love (or pretend to love) every single facet of whatever it is you're a fan of.

Fans can (and should) be willing to point out when something is bad, and explain why it's bad. Because complaining about those things is the only way those things will ever be fixed. And when the thing you're a fan of has mostly been hot garbage for 20+ years, you're probably a bit justified when it comes to complaining about it.

If Disney wants fans to stop being negative about Star Wars, maybe Disney should actually put more effort into making Star Wars something worth being positive about.

If anything, I find fanatical positivity and the desire to shout down or punish anyone who dares be critical of the thing you love to be far more toxic and disgusting than fans being negative about the thing they love. It's more of a pathological cult mentality than it is someone actually enjoying something on its own merits.

I tend to see most cases of "Oh, the fanbase is so toxic!" online as a bullshit excuse mostly used by soulless executives and creatively bankrupt pretentious artists who are selling a substandand product and who are deliberately attempting to divert blame and reframe the narrative, because the alternative is to actually accept responsibility for the mess they themselves created. And that makes them sad! So it must be someone else's fault. It's you're fault for not loving terrible things, you toxic monster!

Star Wars fans are just as justified to complain about Star Wars as comic book fans are justified to complain about how much comics suck these days, or Doctor Who fans complaining about how the show has been mostly shit since Moffat took over, or Game of Thrones fans complaining about how the show took a nosedive into terrible writing after the show overtook the books, and so on. All of those people are right.
