It seems too complicated for bigots to do lol It's something some people do to 'hedge' against someone's preferred pronouns because it makes them uncomfortable. While they/them is a good generic pronoun for people, it is bad to use they/them for a trans person who doesn't use they/them when you aren't using they/them for cisgender people in the same context. It is bad to use she/her for a cis woman and then turn around and use they/them for a trans woman, for instance (unless otherwise stated to be ok).
