#210:

PrinceKaro - A young woman marring into a rich family is dismayed when her new in-laws activate their trap card and randomly and unskillfully try to murder her all night long.

If you think that story sounds dumb, well it IS dumb, but they finesse the scenario just enough for it to be self aware of how stupid it is.

There is some great dark humor in this such as how our incompetent group of would-be slashers keep accidentally butchering the family housekeepers only to respond with nonchalant disappointment.

It is not really great cinema, but it is entertaining and different and perfectly captures the tone of comedy horror, which is often difficult to do (at least well).

Thesmark - One of my favorite first watches for this. Focused with some great moments of dark humor. I like the whole cast (the matriarch who looks and acts like a Disney villain is the scene stealer)-they all have their own business, something that makes them unique and distinctive. Its one of many horror movies this decade about the battle between the haves and have nots (not the least bit surprising given everything), and how rich people will do anything to stay on top. It also has a kind of Die Hard quality where the heroine really looks like shes been through hell by the end of it.

BetrayedTangy - Id say Killing Game movies are one of my favorite guilty pleasures. Theyre usually not very good, but they still manage to be so much fun. The heavy focus on the concept allows the actors to really ham it up to great effect and Ready or Not is no exception. However, what I think puts this movie ahead of the pack is how great it is at subverting the typical tropes. Usually, the villains in these movies are super competent and everything goes exactly as they need to until the very end of the movie where the hero outsmarts them, but here the La Domas family so incompetent that they end up being their own downfall and its fucking hilarious. Great movie that gave me a ton of laughs.

FFDragon - Ridiculous concept, fun movie overall.

Lightning Strikes - In-laws.

A fun romp of a horror movie strongly reminiscent of Youre Next, but with extremely incompetent killers rather than a hyper-competent protagonist. Its not the most original film in the world but it is a highly entertaining one. The lead character offers an iconic image in her blood-splattered wedding dress and is very well-played by Samara Weaving. She is backed up by a delightfully eccentric supporting cast including a surprising turn from Adam Brody. The gags are great, in particular the grisly accidental deaths of the maids, and the pacing is just about perfect for this kind of film.

There are some flaws here. It definitely could have been clearer on some of the rules of the game, eg was the husband really safe until she said she wanted acdivorce? If so, why? I was also unsettled by the children exploding offscreen even if they were tiny monsters (or at least one of them was), it puts a damper on a very blackly comic scene. On the whole though this is a horror-comedy that is both funny and scary.

I also feel that the social commentary is quite good, about the pointless cruelty of the super rich. A cruelty only limited by how incredibly incompetent they are. This is a fun, fast-paced horror-comedy that also ha something to say.

4/5

Biggest scare: Not exactly a scare, but the maid getting killed in the dumbwaiter is unforgettable.

Plasmabeam - Great setup and lead actress, but the actual wedding night hunt didnt feel particularly inspired. Its a fun but forgettable flick with a great ending image.

Fortybelowsummer - Rich people are evil alert! Not an entirely original concept here, that of humans hunting other humans, but the wrinkle of hunting the new spouse was pretty cool, if weird. Like why are they cool with sometimes just playing a regular ass game. I think its explained why they play this one random death game but I dont remember. All the games should be death games, but anyway. This kind of felt like a movie that didnt know what it wanted to be, but I think its a good thing that it didnt take itself too seriously. Without the element of humor that it adds, we wouldnt have gotten that awesome ending. I was hoping that the curse was real, and that the family would end up dying at the end, but I didnt expect that gloriously explosive gore fest. The maids getting killed randomly was funny and overall, it was good, dumb fun.

Snake - Ready or Not is a solid film that takes its easy-to-follow central concept and just makes a total farce out of it. It never has a serious tone, though it does have some pretty serious messaging at its heart regardless. Like what seems to be a lot of the movies on the list, Ready or Not lives or dies on its magnificent lead performance by Samara Weaving, though the characterization of the family definitely gives her something to bounce of off with just how incompetent they are at doing what they need to - its a bit like Tucker & Dale where the family kind of just takes care of themselves really as Grace fumbles her way through the extreme version of Hide and Seek. Even though Grace isnt an instant badass like Erin, her spunky, outsider attitude still gives her an air of toughness, even if, tragically, she thought she had finally found a family she belonged to after growing up a foster child. What Ready or Not succeeds at best for me is highlighting the downfalls of the upper class, how they feel theyre owed something and would do anything to keep their wealth and power - even a deal with the devil. Sure its something thats been said countless times before, but Ready or Nots charm, wit, and explosively bloody ending (easily one of the best endings on the list) has never proved that point in a more amusing or gratifying way.

Rockus - What sets this above Adam Wingards Youre Next I think was its performance from Samara Weaving and how the film approaches the mentality of its lead and how shes capable of dealing with the Most Dangerous Game evening that takes place. Weavings Grace is more just an everywoman put into an extreme position and makes it much easier to engage with, and even though they both feature a lot of dark humor, makes it seem less cold than Wingards movie. Still dont know how I feel about its Cabin in the Woods type finale which comes off as a deus ex copout but it is kind of funny.

Tom Nook - 'Death-game' type movies are a sub-genre I'm guilty of liking more than I should. So I would expect to have liked this movie more than 28th. Firstly, I didn't think the protagonist was at all enjoyable. My first thought was that it was Samara Weaving, because I wasn't familiar with her in starring roles, but I later saw The Babysitter and liked her a lot in that, so that definitely wasn't the case. With no protagonist to like, maybe the villains would be fun, but that wasn't the case either. So with no characters, to like, maybe the game itself or the violence will be fun? Still, nothing. I just can't say I felt much of anything about this. It had a few alright parts, but was just pretty meh.
