The_Viscount posted... But that's not actually the cost of living in an area. You don't need a single-occupancy apartment, that's a luxury. And housing is generally the largest single expense. If you control your housing expenses, you can live in most places. Oh, I know, since I sold my house I have been living on less than $1000 a month (about 4 years now). I rented rooms and for the last 2 1/2 years basements (kinda like my own apartment). You can live on less, but that should not be considered a livable wage. You should not be forced to live with others, or consider it a luxury.
