the way I always think about synchro/xyz/links are just, they're fusion monsters without needing a polymerization card. It's basically the same thing, you need 2+ (most of the time) monsters with specific prereqs that let you go into another monster. Links with the arrows though are a bit more involved though yeah, I didn't play in that era so I don't quite understand the deal there. I "think" it's that you have to summon a link monster in a special zone and you can't further special summon unless it's to a zone that your link monster points to?
