By and large, any time a North American refers to "Hockey" without specifying what sort of terrain it's being played on, you can safely assume they're talking about ice hockey. If they're talking about any other version, they'll specify "floor hockey," "field hockey," "roller hockey," or whatever else is appropriate, unless the context makes it very clear which one is being discussed.

That, and absolutely nothing about it is confusing because the topic title talks about somebody's throat being slit by a skate. That should be enough context for you to figure out that it's ice hockey without needing somebody to spell it out for you.
