The Tribe

i apparently forgot how long the takes were. i think the ending scenes just pushed everything else out of my mind. i did feel more impatient this time around and i think i ended up liking it less this time around. some of the scenes i can see the reasoning for being long, particularly all the uncomfortable ones, but there are others like the scene where they're getting passports or standing in line where i'm thinking, "surely you could have cut this down a little without sacrificing any of the intended effect?" maybe it was to make all the takes more or less consistent in length more than anything.

I did always say I like the film more for the experience than the film itself and that's still true. I do admire the decision to not provide subtitles where we're pretty much dropped into this world with no guidance. Although that does come with the consequence of the story being rather simplistic in order to remain accessible.

The best word to describe this film for me would be cold. From the weather to the relationships to the characters, everything just feels so distant and detached. The long uncomfortable sex scenes I'm thinking about how freezing it must be, particularly the first one where they're in like a boiler room or something (?!).

One thing I also noticed this time around seems pretty obvious in retrospect but how simple thing like carrying objects would hinder communication even a little bit. They would be signing with one hand because they were carrying something and I'm wondering if their conversations are "shortened" in any way. And if someone is doing something you don't like, it's much easier to just ignore them. Makes the themes of isolation/belonging more pronounced.

I considered lowering my score to a 7 but I think I'm going to keep it an 8 for now. I mean I still think about it from time to time so there's that. And the rest is silence
