Not sure if anyone else here watched Every Frame A Painting on Youtube like I did years ago, but the creator of them apparently is responsible for a few episodes of the new Netflix series Voir. Haven't watched the show yet myself but I loved those Youtube videos so I'm interested because of Tony Zhou alone.

They realized it was no longer financially feasible to continue making the videos.

They did some (one?) essays for Criterion too.

Really great essays on their channel. The Jackie Chan and Marvel Symphonic Universe ones are particularly accessible and I would recommend them to anybody who hasn't seen yet

When you mentioned karaoke I was pretty sure which movie you were watching, but talking about the halfway mark makes me think of the exact same movie except the karaoke scene I'm thinking of takes place in the second half of the movie? I can't reconcile those two bits of information unless you're watching the movie in reverse.

i watched this over three days and found my mind wandering quite a bit. and this was definitely not the movie where it was a good idea for that. i was just constantly lost to what the fuck was going on. there were definitely scenes i thought were great but it was more because of cool aesthetics in isolation and not because i knew what was going on. i probably owe it a closer watch and not one where i'm tired as fuck and only half paying attention but tbh can't imagine watching this again any time soon. i literally did not even realize the second part was supposed to be one take until i read up on wiki afterwards so yeah. similarly when the title screen appeared like halfway into the movie it hit me like 'wait did they really not until the halfway mark'

still think the karaoke scene was the most interesting. i thought it was going to do the whole 'crime boss acts all nonchalant before beating the shit out of somsone' thing but it never came, leaving more to imagination but the anticipation throughout the scene was something else. apple eating scene was particularly memorable too. where it just stays on him for such a long time.

lovely bit of trivia i read about how the marketing for the film was to mainstream audiences and that led to a 96% decrease in sales the day following the opening.

really lovely end credits song though. 5/10

Aguirre, the Wrath of God

My opinion on this was pretty weak from the beginning, with a lot of pretty poor performances coming from anyone that wasn't Klaus Kinski. For the first half of the film, my opinion remained mostly the same, and it was overall an "ok" jungle survival drama. In the second half of the film, it begins to shine, in particular in the last 20 minutes or so as the remains of the crew begin to lose their senses and finally give in to the madness and hopelessness of their journey. It also helped for the performances too, as most of the bad actors were weeded out by the story early on, as the crew slowly dwindles to a few desperate survivors.

Is it one of the great films of all time, like it's made out to be? I mean, I wouldn't go nearly that far. It inspired Apocalypse Now (which was a much better film in my opinion) and overall I thought it was solid and its strengths overpowered its weaknesses.

8/10

I would highly recommend looking up the behind-the-scenes of this one though; they're as wild as the plot itself.

Munchausen

i liked the style and contrast of the imagined ideal future that would have been not so ideal for the mother. wasn't expecting a film without any dialogue but i got used to it. the storyline did feel a little familiar so it didn't blow me away but it was overall enjoyable.

passing random thoughts:
kid looks a little too scrawny to be playing college football
...colleges have yearbooks?
putting wedding rings in food is an absolutely awful way to propose. didn't even wrap it in a plastic bag or anything

Nobody

i was talking about the robbers lol. clearly intended to show their amateur status in contrast to our main guy but still. no stakeout/knowledge of the the target and identifying features so easily exposed? cam on

Three main moments of interest for me throughout the film. First, the begining montage of his life showing the monotony and repetitiveness of suburban life. Obviously not a new concept but I really enjoyed the editing here and the way it was cut.

Second, the beginning part of the bus fight where they're trading blows and there's no music. Really helped to underscore the brutality and the idea that the guy was (obviously not completely but closer to) a "nobody." But then the second part of the fight the music comes back on and he just beats the shit out of all of them. And eh...it was still all right but I just liked that first part a lot more. And as the movie goes on I kind of got numb to the action scenes when they started feeling a lot more familiar.

Third: dad in retirement home pulling out the SHOTGUN gave me a genuine feeling of excitement and happiness. The final fight? it was ok.

Also, surely major criminal organizations do not keep a majority(?) of their assets in cash. Or all together at one location like that right?

The Guilty beat

Bill Burr and Jake Gyllenhaal yelling "fuck you" back and forth was great

Paul Dano trying to complain about the prostitute he hired robbing him also great

this is a movie mostly carried by Jake Gyllenhaal doing a good job as lieutenant mr angry boy

This type of bottle episode (thanks Abed) movie can usually be great or a drag, and I think for the most part I enjoyed it. It helps that Gyllenhaal had a pretty solid story and voice cast to work with. Reminds me a little of Ryan Reynolds in Buried, where he had even less to work with spatially so it was entirely dependent on dialogue.

Not something I'd watch again or even really remember in a year, but solid enough.

The Guilty

When I started the movie, I felt something I hadn't felt in a while and that was "8 potential." It's basically when you start watching a movie and can guess how much you'll end up liking it (8/10) based on the early part (you can tell from style, dialogue, etc.). And honestly the early feeling doesn't deviate too much from the final result for me like 95% of the time I'd say. But I was pretty hooked on this from the first couple minutes when I realized what was going on: interesting premise, an amusing hook of a first call, noticeably good performance from good old Jake. Most of all, it got me thinking about that kind of job and all the little factors and bits of information you need to control or be able to adapt to on the fly to be good at it. Like, I was imagining what if it's someone's first day on a job like that. Maybe because I've found that I'm kind of terrible at dealing with high stress situations but I thought it was fascinating to watch someone be able to deal with situations like that and would have actually been so down for more of that PRO PROBLEM HANDLING SKILLS. Unfortunately, Joe unravels and starts acting pretty fucking unprofessional pretty fucking quickly. The "8 feeling" went away at the halfway point but it was the first time in a while I felt that excited about a beginning in a movie.

Still overall good and I really actually liked the one-location setting. There's a looming sense of dread because you only know what you're told and can't see anything for yourself. Especially for someone in that position who needs to manage and organize the information that comes in, send it to the right people, etc. The idea of that is more interesting to me than a cop being on the streets, even if it might seem like the street stuff is the "next level."

I did happen to see the letterboxd rating (2.9) before watching. Obviously I don't agree with them half the time but if anything, they tend to be higher than what I end up rating. So when I see a score below 3 on there for something I'm going to watch, I'm a bit curious. As I already mentioned I was feeling pretty high on it for the first half, so I was like "what's the big deal? does it turn to shit later or something?" After finishing it and wondering if I missed some blatant political commentary that got the letterboxd crowd fuming, I looked at the reviews and that's when I found out this was a FUCKING REMAKE of a 2018 Danish film. I felt DIRTY. I guess I'll go watch the original at some point now but hearing this was almost a shot-for-shot remake doesn't make me too excited to go watch right away.

also. Jake Gyllenhaal saying "homie"

so letterboxd ratings and such for me are such a weird thing

I'd say in general, I agree with them on a lot of stuff, specifically, movies that are just under the radar enough to get snubbed over for the Oscars despite having Oscars-worthy performances/etc. It really stands out every awards season, where my favorite films of the year (over the last 3 years, it's been I'm Thinking of Endings Things, The Lighthouse and You Were Never Really Here) tend to be the ones that get love on Letterboxd but don't get the awards they deserve. Same went for Eighth Grade, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Blindspotting, and it goes on. In any given year, the fan-voted awards on Letterboxd are way more in line with my tastes.

That being said, people on Letterboxd can get... pretentious? Shitty? Like there's a certain point where a good movie with a mixed reception goes from being a fun little gem that the users love, to being too popular, and those same users suddenly hate it for what makes it controversial. And like, you're free to like what you like or not, but I swear every user I see on that site labelled as a "patron" ends up with just the top rated review on every single movie by spewing out bullshit to fit whatever letterboxd's particular crowd will eat up.

It's hard to pinpoint exactly where it goes so wrong and what's so annoying about it, but that's all to say I love letterboxd's end-of-year lists and could care less about their actual ratings
