a medium-sized town in Floridia gets COVID a day.

Technically misleading, because Florida is also the 3rd most populated state in the US.

For comparison, California and Texas are right up there in the top 3 for number of cases per week, and actually have more total cases overall than Florida does (though Florida's current rate of infection IS higher - but not catastrophically higher). But none of them are really ridiculously out of proportion to the population of the state.

The first major outlier is Louisiana - it's like #4 for weekly infections right now, but is like 25th in terms of population. That's a major indicator that Louisiana is fucking things up hardcore (and yes, New Orleans is a significant part of that).

On the converse side, a state like New Jersey where the population is 11th (with the largest population density in the US), but the number of cases is actually like 25th overall, implies that NJ is handling its shit more effectively, because things are a lot more under control than you'd expect from a state with that many people packed in that closely together.

Statistics can be more confusing than most people really understand. And most people don't look any deeper because it's just fun to point and laugh at Florida Man a herp derp.
