Assessing it very subjectively, the slope of daily case counts looks shallower this time than for wave 3. That doesn't conclusively mean anything as far as peak case rates go, but it does suggest it won't be quite as bad.

Perhaps more significantly, deaths haven't been spiking nearly as hard as case rates. Part of that is because there's a lag between spikes in cases and spikes in deaths, but the fact that a decent number of people are vaccinated is going to help a lot. Not as much as it should, because vaccination rates are not where they should be, but it'll make a big difference.

Nah, there have been multiple, clear waves in case numbers. I might actually call this the 5th wave, since there was a pretty decent surge in April on the way down from the peak of the third wave (probably Easter travel), but there are definitely discrete peaks that can be identified as waves.
