True. First responders (or whatever the English phrase would be) are important and when those are underfunded then the quality of the services declines.

Not to mention, both sides have issues they want the police to be stricter on and thus need the funding to be able to do that.

The central thrust of defunding the police is reallocating those funds to other services that are better suited for dealing with situations like mental health crises, rather than throwing money at police that routinely end up just making things worse because they're not the right people for the job. In fact, it's because police are being deployed to so many inappropriate situations that they find themselves underfunded and spread too thin. As counterintuitive as it seems, reallocating funding away from them to more appropriate services will in fact help with budget issues, simply because a huge amount of their inflated budgets goes toward militarizing them, and that just isn't necessary with better crisis management.

As it stands, police are already the #1 line on many municipal budgets by a huge margin. That's focusing a whole lot of funding on cures instead of prevention.
