Everyone wants to believe that it's their hard effort and smart decision making that is responsible for their wins. It's a bias that's very hard to break through. On top of that, people tend to inherently over estimate how tough they have had it in comparison to others unless cued very specifically. Which is why you have a bunch of people in white upper middle class suburbia who describe themselves as "poor". Also the idea that these conversations "always" blow up and cause strife is obviously a case of the squeaky wheel getting the grease.
