The notion of ascribing privilege levels to individuals has and still feels like an attempt at further division between people. I don't understand the notion that getting people to understand the circumstances and plights of people with different life circumstances as yourself needs to come from this backwards perspective. The fact that this shit always seems to blow up and cause unneeded strife shows that the methodology behind it is flawed, even if it may not inherently be incorrect.

This would be fine as a privilege checklist, but as a "white" privilege checklist, it's flat out discriminatory.

The issue is not the inherent ideas behind relative privilege, but the act of assigning privilege to individuals. We can describe on average that white people have it better than black people in America. There are plenty of objective facts that back that up. The issue comes when you want to apply that to the individual level. Correct or not, it is a label on a person that can come with a lot of different implications depending on who is doing the labeling and how the person reacts to the labeling. This is a conversation to be had, but the people guiding it are doing a really shitty job in terms of presentation.

The statements appear in a company document entitled "Reimagine Tomorrow: Where we all belong." The document is an anti-racism discussion guide that teaches "allyship for race consciousness," according to documents published Friday on Twitter by writer Christopher F. Rufo.

This Rufo guy seems to be entirely fixated on ginning up this sort of white grievance outrage.

its pretty obvious its not meant to be a white privilege assessment. its just privilege in general...But of course, the usual victims got asshurt and said "OMG ITS ONLY ABOUT WHITE PEOPLE HOW UNCOOL"...With what's going on in the world right now, it is more commonly white people that tend to live in ignorant bliss on how others are treated, but outside of that aspect, the assessment includes things about gender, sexuality, etc. things that can affect all races. Newsweek is clearly race baiting because "Disney asks employees to understand that others may have more difficult times based on things you don't personally ever have to think about" isn't a new story...

Yup. It's frustrating as hell talking to people who clearly grew up privileged who act like they worked so hard when their parents bought them a decent car in hs, paid for their college tuition, their rent, etc. Sure, you might've still worked hard for those A's in college but it's like, please.

Idk, I wouldn't consider myself privileged at all compared to most of America but I do consider myself privileged for not ever having been raped. That shit will fuck you up.

I just feel that because rape is such a traumatic experience that casually asking something like this on a checklist isn't very appropriate and that tackling rape and sexual assault and any privilege associated with it should be done with much more care and consideration.

The document ends with a 21-day challenge for employees to reflect on the effects of being "raised in a society that elevates white culture over others."

Another section of the document asks participants what they can do to "pivot" from "white dominant culture" to "something different."

Some features of white dominant culture, according to the document, include seeing things as either absolutely "racist" or "not racist", treating input from non-senior work leaders as a threat, overly focusing on individualism and fearing open conflict.

Its doing the same thing for women, LGBTQ, etc. If you're white with a southern accent and had it mocked, go ahead and check that off and hopefully people realize that too and don't do it to you.

You can't just ignore the context of everything else going on in the course so that you can claim the checklist itself is innocuous. All that other stuff from the article, whether phrased to be baiting or not, exists in the training material as well and is given alongside with the checklist.

But let me ask you more fundamental question. How do you respond to the fact that multiple studies have been performed on this type of training and nearly all of them, if not all of them, have come to the conclusion that they don't work?

You can want to try and reduce racism in the country while also acknowledging that these types of programs are ineffective or damaging. What is your motivation for fighting on behalf of this type of training even though it goes against the science?

Just because most privileged people are white doesn't mean being white is a privilege. Poverty is poverty, lack of connections are lack of connections. If you don't have the means to get ahead skin color isn't going to make a difference.

Sure, statistically if you're white you're probably more likely to have those means but the majority of white people get fucked by privileged people just as much as anyone else.
