but then they release and I play them and its like . . .oh

That was sort of my path for BG3 even without playing it.

They announced it and I was like "Holy fuck, BG3? YES."

Then I noticed Larian was working on it, and people mentioned it was probably going to feel more like a successor to Divinity than an actual BG game, and I was like "...meh."

Then they leaked that it was mostly going to revolve around mind flayers and the Gith, and I was like "Bleh."

Then it was released in year-long early-access beta and turned out to be a buggy, broken mess, and I was like "Ugh."

And then I watched a few let's plays of it on YouTube and was mostly like, "Man, this all looks like it pretty much full-on sucks."

At this point I can't imagine ever wanting to play it at all. And that sort of apathy then spreads, so now I barely give a shit about the existence of any other potential future D&D games either. Considering how badly it feels like they fucked this one up, I can't imagine a scenario where any other games are going to be any better. They're all probably just going to be shitty cash-ins on the existing IP brand recognition rather than worthwhile games in their own right.

BG3 feels like a cult brand IP that they could have slam-dunked, but they completely missed their shot on - and now they've burned most of that hype and goodwill up. They're never going to be able to cash that particular check again, and it's kind of a shame.

Then again, that seems to be the running trend lately. Cyberpunk and V:tM Bloodlines 2 sort of fall into the same sort of camp, and those were spectacularly fucked up as well.
