Still have it for my ps2 if I ever actually plug it in again.

But last time I played it (quite a few years ago now) it hadn't aged well. They do a good job in the trailer making it look good, but it doesn't compare to well to other action rpgs that are more recent anymore sadly.

Well it's available now.
I wishlisted it on Xbox One. I never played it back in the day but PS2/GC/Xbox gen was most memorable for me so, it has my interest.
Can anyone tell me, how is the story? Is it good even if I'm unfamiliar with DnD/Baldur's Gate?

demand from a cult following will do that

It was almost certainly rushed out because, with the original announcement that Larian was working on BG3 (which feels a lot like BG in name only), a lot of old-school fans pointed out that they should have just revived the Dark Alliance franchise since in a lot of ways it meshes better with modern sensibilities in terms of gameplay.

With a lot of people talking up the old Dark Alliance games, someone in WotC or even higher up in Hasbro probably said "Man, we should rerelease that and try and cash in on this."

Either that, or since they were already working on what is essentially supposed to be "Dark Alliance 3" (which itself ironically has almost nothing to do with Dark Alliance and almost feels more like an Icewind Dale sequel), they figured a quick rerelease of the first two would be a nice, cheap way to get a bit of extra PR to help spur the hype for the new game.

WotC has been pushing real hard to get a bunch of D&D games into the pipeline while the popularity of the franchise is high again. We're probably going to see even more coming down the way soon.

Can anyone tell me, how is the story? Is it good even if I'm unfamiliar with DnD/Baldur's Gate?

It's barely a story, and it's completely unrelated to the Baldur's Gate/BGII:Shadows of Amn/BGII:Throne of Bhaal games that were on PC.

The first Dark Alliance game is basically "You're a hero, there are bad guys, now go kill them." There's a bit more plot than that, but not much, and it's mostly self-contained in the game (so you don't really need to know much about the setting or the other games to understand it). It actually makes a nice, simplistic introduction to the setting if you're not familiar with the Forgotten Realms already (the Dark Alliance games were actually my first real introduction to the setting, and helped me get way more into it later). You basically start out playing as "Generic Fighter", "Generic Archer", or "Generic Sorceress", and you show up in the city of Baldur's Gate "for reasons". Then you get the cliched "go into the tavern basement and kill rats" starter quest, and then stuff happens.

The second Dark Alliance game has more story (though not a TON more, it's still a Diablo-clone hack-and-slash from 17 years ago), the five main characters are a bit more developed and interesting (and each gets their own unique sidequest), and the main bad guy is a little more robust, but it's mostly just a slight improvement on the original rather than a complete innovation.

If you've ever played the original Diablo games, I tend to think of the Dark Alliance games as sort of falling somewhere between the original Diablo and Diablo II in terms of both game and narrative complexity.

but then they release and I play them and its like . . .oh

That was sort of my path for BG3 even without playing it.

They announced it and I was like "Holy fuck, BG3? YES."

Then I noticed Larian was working on it, and people mentioned it was probably going to feel more like a successor to Divinity than an actual BG game, and I was like "...meh."

Then they leaked that it was mostly going to revolve around mind flayers and the Gith, and I was like "Bleh."

Then it was released in year-long early-access beta and turned out to be a buggy, broken mess, and I was like "Ugh."

And then I watched a few let's plays of it on YouTube and was mostly like, "Man, this all looks like it pretty much full-on sucks."

At this point I can't imagine ever wanting to play it at all. And that sort of apathy then spreads, so now I barely give a shit about the existence of any other potential future D&D games either. Considering how badly it feels like they fucked this one up, I can't imagine a scenario where any other games are going to be any better. They're all probably just going to be shitty cash-ins on the existing IP brand recognition rather than worthwhile games in their own right.

BG3 feels like a cult brand IP that they could have slam-dunked, but they completely missed their shot on - and now they've burned most of that hype and goodwill up. They're never going to be able to cash that particular check again, and it's kind of a shame.

Then again, that seems to be the running trend lately. Cyberpunk and V:tM Bloodlines 2 sort of fall into the same sort of camp, and those were spectacularly fucked up as well.

I still have my original BGDA but not 2 (which i liked a bit more).

Both were great in the day, but even like 6-8 years ago when I replayed it the last time it was dated by then. Things like Path of Exile were already around then, and honestly it just doesn't compare to playing a char in PoE etc. I have so many D2 like games that I could play instead of it, that are more complicated/fun etc that it's silly to even bother loading it anymore.

Loved them once, but they have not aged well (well at least the first didn't and the second was just like MORE of the first).

Same goes with a few other games like the playstation version of bards tale etc. They were a blast in the day, but much harder to enjoy now.

The new BGDA3 they are making is totally different, and revolved around the Crystal Shard story by RA Salvator. Enjoyed the books, I might try the game, but it does look like it's meant for co-op and many are comparing it to the Avengers game, which didn't interest me (would rather play/replay the old Marval Alliance games over honestly).

Beating the game once unlocks a Gauntlet mode where you play as Drizzt Do'Urden, beat that and you unlock Extreme, beat that and you can start a new game with Drizzt.

DA2 was still better for unlocks, with both Drizzt and Artemis Entreri available to unlock.

I've got DA1 on the PS2 and DA2 on the Xbox.

I still have the original consoles so I COULD theoretically pull them out of storage if I wanted to play either, but it feels easier to just go with re-releases (if they're worthwhile) or rely on backwards compatibility (if it isn't too shit). I know when I played DA2 on my 360 the audio was a bit choppy (which is always a problem with emulated "backwards compatible" games) and lag was a significant issue.

It's basically Icewind Dale: Dark Alliance and not Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance.

It's why they literally took the "Baldur's Gate" out of the title and are just calling it Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance now.

As far as we know, yes.

It's not about any of the characters from the original games, it's about Drizzt and his crew. And it's about a thousand miles farther north. And about 20 years earlier.

So no, no mysterious evil dude from Mulhorand as the bad guy this time around.

Three - Drizzt is an optional unlock, but you can't play as him when you first start. Your initial choice is basically Fighter, Sorceress, or shit Archer.

The starting options in DA2 were better - Barbarian, Cleric, Monk, Rogue, Necromancer.

it's slightly upscaled. supposedly 4k, but the graphics were never actually good, so it just looks clean and weirdly too upscaled.

the videos are unchanged, they look like blurry garbage ass

there's achievements and trophy support

and that's it, everything else is the same. no online play, no added content, no bug fixes.

i really want to know the reasoning behind porting this to current gen tbh.

Was the rogue a dwarf? I remember the dwarf being able to use traps or something. Been forever since I played DA2 because i think I had it on my xbox and I gave that away decades ago.

I did like 2 better since I got to play as Drizzt and Artremis as well so it was basically 7 play throughs (per time I played it) as apposed to 4 in the first game (if I bothered unlocking drizzt again).

I did like both games alot when they came out, since DnD games like that were very rare. I just can't believe i've been reading Forgotten Realm books especially Drizzt and crew for that long.
