It's more that stupid people get overenthusiastic about stupid things to the point where they start to become annoying is nothing new, and feel the need to trumpet their enthusiasm far and wide and get salty when other people refuse to play along. And then some people are going to start to get irritated at the constant blitz of people talking about it, until they start to feel the need to vent their own annoyance.

That annoyance would be understandable, if that actually happened. Nobody makes that big of a deal out of Pi Day, except maybe saying "heh, it's Pi Day" and going about their business, possibly with more pie than usual (which is generally going to be a good thing, unless you're some weirdo that hates pie). Same with Star Wars day, aside from the obligatory SW sales in various digital storefronts (which are either beneficial or easy to ignore, depending on how interested in buying the products one is). Characterizing simple recognition as "overenthusiasm" definitely falls into "stop liking what I don't like" territory.
