It's understandable only in that people that get upset when other people have fun

Nah. It's more that stupid people get overenthusiastic about stupid things to the point where they start to become annoying is nothing new, and feel the need to trumpet their enthusiasm far and wide and get salty when other people refuse to play along. And then some people are going to start to get irritated at the constant blitz of people talking about it, until they start to feel the need to vent their own annoyance.

Honestly, it's how I tend to view April Fools Day these days. It never used to be all that major a thing, then the Internet latched onto it hardcore. A few sites did some clever stuff for a couple years, and then the whole thing just turned into a lame mess to the point where it's almost worthwhile to avoid all social media or "hip" websites for 24 hours so you don't have to deal with it.

It's a function of how the Internet tends to polarize everything into its most extreme form. Enthusiasm becomes fanaticism, which in turn tends to spur apathy into antipathy. Excessive love spawns excessive hate.
