It looks like they're kinda leaning into the character drama too hard, and I'm getting the impression that we're going to have subplots and side plots. Keep in mind that the first MK film also made it look like the focus was on the tournament, then we wound up getting... how many fights? It didn't seems like there were that many bouts.

And where some of the fighting is just taking place wherever, it suggests something broader.

If it's done right, then nobody complains. And if nobody complains, it can't get that much attention. Keep in mind that the feminists who fought in Gamergate weren't even gamers so it's not like they're looking to improve anything, they were just trying to build their personal platforms and brands so they could make money and gain fame without any real work.
