They had no real plan for anything Many of the people that stormed the capitol were indeed just idiots caught up in the mob mentality. Many more, however, went there very well-armed and with documented intent to assassinate or hold hostage high-ranking political figures for the sake of getting the political outcome they wanted. IED's were found in a number of locations. This was - by every reasonable metric and piece of evidence that has been revealed during the subsequent investigation - a credible threat against the lives of those in the US government, and a genuine terrorist attack.
