the movies are awesome and still hold up relatively well. I rate all three of them very highly. the actual episodic series I've heard less good things about, since it has a lot more pointless filler battles and is slowed paced in general. haven't attempted to watch it myself, I think I'd probably be able to enjoy it, but I understand why some people wouldn't. there's a reason why the original TV run failed, but the movies were a huge cultural success.

I think before you watch an old series like this whether you try the movies or TV series you have to go in with the right mindset. character traits and development are a lot more subtle than we are used to in modern writing, pacing tends to be a lot more dry and slow. mobile suit gundam is honestly a series about how war sucks, and how much of a toll it can take on civilians who get dragged into war. but the narrative doesn't beat you over the head with this theme, either. it's about love, grief, revenge, and coming of age during times of extreme stress. about how sometimes you don't even understand why the person you're fighting has to die, but you can't hesitate or you'll risk the lives of the people you know and care about. and sometimes even that isn't enough. I really can't overstate how amazing the themes of the series are conveyed, even if the writing is a bit more clunky by modern standards. the action and visuals are not going to be as impressive as a 2020 anime, but they're pretty impressive for the time when it was made and it's still watchable.

all in all I'd say the movies have a LOT of parallels with the star wars OT; becoming a cultural phenomena, inspiring an entire franchise in their wake, and commonly still considered to be classic all time greats... but there are definitely people who would try to watch it today and be like 'wow this is boring.'

so yeah, proceed at your own risk.
