It amazes me how many people don't realize that you don't have the same rights in a school that you do outside of it. The school may be "public" but that doesn't mean you are allowed to do things just because you wouldn't be arrested for them outside of the school.

You should remain dressed ideologically neutral at school. This is one reason I am in favour of uniforms. The other?...

I went to a snobby school and most of the kids had parents with decent jobs, but there were a few super poor kids that somehow wound up being districted in so you'd get the dudes with like gleaming Adidas everything then the kids with Walmart shit with holes in it. I was so out of touch about it until one year we were all talking about the cool loot we got at Xmas and my one buddy was like "I got a box of cereal" and I'm like "be serious, dude" and he's like "I am." I told my mom that and she was like "omg! If I had known I'd have bought him something!"

My biggest problem with uniforms is twofold:

1) It doesn't allow for individuality, everyone just becomes the same person. Individuality, even in clothing style, should be embraced and welcomed (as long as it fits the standards of good taste).

2) It doesn't help students understand the problem you describe, it just covers it up. Or worse, it makes it so they become adults who are less inclined to understand that discriminating against someone for those things is wrong. Rather then just forcing everyone to wear the same thing, how about teaching children to not discriminate against someone because of their financial situation, their clothing style, etc?
