I'll second Sacred Stones as another good alternative for newcomers. It still has the traditional Fire Emblem gameplay (including permadeath) but is a bit easier than the other pre-Awakening FE games to make it more accessible for newcomers. Also, it's one of the very few FE games that's completely isolated from any other game in the series, meaning no sequel, prequel, or even a tiny reference to another game in the series.

I can't agree with the other two he said though. While they're both fantastic games and definitely worth playing, Blazing Sword gets pretty rough and might be too difficult for a series newcomer, and the core gameplay of Three Houses is so different than all of the other games in the series that playing it first might give someone the wrong impression of what the entire franchise is like.
