Greetings and salutations to the 189th Anime General Topic! Yeah, that's right, we love our anime!

However, which anime do you REALLY love? Not just think is great, not even think is excellent... but is the mythical TEN OUTTA TEN!

For those who do not typically rate their anime, I guess think about it and post? I have an MAL account and I rate every anime I have seen. So, for your critiquing pleasure and general starting topic of discussion... here are my 10/10's! Say what you want about them, highlight ones you think others here would like, or whatever! I'm SUPER excited to see what films and series people view as a ten outta ten!

FILMS

Ghost in the Shell - A classic. Quite high concept at times, might give you an existential crisis. Still holds up today.
Perfect Blue - Never quite sure what is real and what is not. An untrustworthy narrator, a mix of acting, dreams, and real life. Excellent story being told despite the jumble of reality and otherwise.
Grave of the Fireflies - The best anti-war movie ever made. Full stop. Fucking destroys me every time I watch it.
A Silent Voice - The best anti-bullying movie ever made. Beautiful, shows how bullying affects both the victim and the perpetrator. I will show it to every class I teach as a full time teacher.

SERIES

Cowboy Bebop - Perhaps the best nearly fully episodic anime ever made. Exceptionally likable flawed characters, an old west in space feel, and wonderful fight choreography. Fantastic music, just amazing.
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood - The best shonen anime ever made. Full stop. Heavy themes of war, loss, and the price you pay for power. Great characters throughout, understandable villains, just enough episodes to tell the story without feeling overly long and filler-filled.
Steins;Gate - An absolutely wonderful adventure about the power of science and the problems with time travel. Probably one of only a handful of time travel stories to get it right.
Haikyuu (S2) - Probably my favorite sports anime of all time and Season 2 is amazing. So much drama, respect for the sport itself, compelling characters, and wonderful animation.
Made in Abyss - If you ever wanted to see what a trip to hell would be like with stunning Ghibli-esque graphics... yes. Yes. Amazing animation and art, WONDERFUL music, atmosphere that is both wondrous and terrifying.
My Hero Academia (S2 and S3) - MHA is a wonderful story using the backdrop of super heroes to tell more complex narratives. Perfectly nestled in that cliche of shonen while giving a spin that keeps it engaging and interesting.
A Place Further Than The Universe - The perfect anime about following your dreams regardless of what others tell you, the coming together of very different people towards the same goal, and making you appreciate the splendor of our own planet.
Dororo (2019) - Wonderful fight choreography is the backdrop of a story of revenge, what is right and wrong, and how far will you go in order to get what was ripped from you. It is uncompromising, brutal, and brilliant. Great creature design.
Promised Neverland (S1) - I can't think of another anime that had such a deep feeling of dread and foreboding. Imagine that everything you knew about life was wrong and the only people you have ever known have always had other plans for you.
Keep Your Hands Off Eizoken - A wonderful love-letter to the creation of anime, the burst of inspiration that drives everyone in the industry, and the monumental task of bringing it to life. Wonderfully whimsical while also being down to earth, it is splendid.

made in abyss
from the new world
black clover
cowboy bebop

I think I will definitely dive into bebop first as its pretty short and after hunter im really gonna need the change of pace. and some of the best shows start slow so I like the idea of black clover. i hope to get to all of these, the world of anime has opened to me haha

what do u all think of attack on titan? i watch the first two episodes with someone else and i was interested.

Fantastic thread theme Jeff.

FILM
Jin-Roh - Strictly one of the best animations I've seen. Movements are fluid, the gunfights are intense and the plot doesn't pull punches.

MSG Trilogy - One of the few series-to-film adaptations that actually improves on the original. "Ai Senshi" is a masterpiece.

SERIES
Macross 7 - Rock music and mecha, my two favorite things in life. Koyasu voice acting too.

G Gundam - Wuxia and mecha, my two favorite things in life (lol). I thought the plot handled the themes of environmentalism better than most anime, and the scene composition had that certain flair that only Imagawa can bring to the table.

Betterman - Rich world, characters, story. The ending sucks but I love everything else about it. I'd never seen an anime take full advantage of the unique camera placement and lighting the medium has to offer, until I saw this.

Birdy The Mighty: Decode - Pleasant to look at, funny sometimes, painful at others. The antics could have gone full out lowbrow but the show stayed relatively serious, and the friendship between the two mains only sweetened with time.

OVA
Giant Robo - This is it for me. Nothing beats a boy and his robot, and to stack Imagawa direction, the Amano soundtrack and essentially a lifetime of characters from Mitsuteru Yokoyama's bibliography on top of that? Just the best.

Patlabor - A pleasant comedy, good animation, cute characters. And cops on the run is always a delight.

MANGA
MARS - One of Yokoyama's finest works. The story hits fast and hard in five volumes, and the ending is a kick in the head.

The Path of Ryu - People talk about Kamen Rider or Cyborg 009 when it comes to Ishinomori, but that's only cuz they haven't read Ryu no Michi. If there was ever SCI FI, it's this: spaceships, giant bugs, ape men, cyborgs, gigantic cities, mutants, alternate dimensions and space gods. And to top it all off, this guy set the bar for two page spreads -in 1969!- that IMO no one's been able to since surpass.

The Ghost and the Lady - Just a nice, two volume story about Florence Nightingale and a Ghost. I really dig the artwork and the depiction of Florence does the real-life lady justice.

I think that's about it for mine (unless I think of something else lol). Now for some others.

Yes, love that film. The ending hurts.

Great summary, nothing more to be said about it. https://i.imgur.com/iAK7DSO.jpg

Turn A Gundam
Tomino's masterpiece. Syd's mecha design is inspired and the whole setting/plot feel like an amazing story out of another era. And years later there's still a ton of discussion to be had about that beautiful ending.

Pretty damn solid list if I don't say so myself.

If I were to make a list, you'd have already hit the nail on the head for movies. Of course I'd really have to show some restraint and not list every other Satoshi Kon or Ghibli movie. Honestly that wouldn't be too hard considering Ghibli's got more "meh" films than outstanding.

TV Shows, I'd add Samurai Champloo. That's easily an all time top 3 for me. Soundtrack especially sets it apart for me. Also Demon Slayer is up there for me. I was shocked by how much I enjoyed it.

The Origin was pretty good indeed. It helped that I always thought Char was the coolest character in UC Gundam (with Bright Noa being almost equal). I think I had like one or two episodes left to watch that I never did though.

However, which anime do you REALLY love? Not just think is great, not even think is excellent... but is the mythical TEN OUTTA TEN!

FULL SERIES:

Symphogear = My #1 favorite anime of all time. Lovable characters, amazing animation, fantastic music, fast-paced action, and non-stop hype all the way through. Seriously, Hibiki suplexed a space shuttle, swung an army tank like a baseball bat, and punched God right in the fucking face. It's batshit insane, and I've never had more fun watching, following, and discussing an anime that I did while watching Symphogear. NANA WILLS IT!

Outlaw Star = The #1 anime from my childhood. Great characters and story, cool and unique action scenes, plus a sense of real adventure and scope that I rarely get from an anime. I loved it back in 2001 and I loved it in my re-watch in 2016, so it's not just nostalgia talking.

Kaleido Star = The most uplifting and inspirational anime I've ever seen. In addition to having so many enjoyable characters and an amazing story, Sora's endless optimism and never-give-up attitude actually helped me have a better outlook on my own life going forward. This is the only anime that I can say had a real, tangible effect on my life and behavior, and it's a sentimental favorite for that reason. To this day, I still re-watch the final episode every now and then when I need a pick-me-up.

Katanagatari = An artistic masterpiece, plain and simple. The character and weapon designs, the creative dialogue, the action-filled fights, everything about it is so beautiful and well-crafted. Every single episode was a dose of total bliss for my eyes, ears, mind, and soul, especially Shichika's incredible battle against Sabi Hakuhei. That one was so epic that I can't even describe it well enough to do it justice. I don't think anyone can.

Kill La Kill = I loved this show for basically the same reasons that I loved Symphogear: great characters, crazy action, and insane hype. It didn't do these quite as well as Symphogear did, but it did have Mako being the greatest comedic relief character that I've ever seen in an anime.

Revue Starlight = I loved this show for basically the same reasons that I loved Katanagatari: artistic beauty in every single aspect of the show. Though the animation is a bit weaker, it makes up for that with the incredible music and sheer creativity that enhance the fight scenes even more.

Cowboy Bebop = I loved this show for basically the same reasons that I loved Outlaw Star: fun characters, great action, and a sense of adventure while still being episodic. I liked Outlaw Star slightly more because it had better lighthearted moments and extra space combat, but both are amazing.

INDIVIDUAL SEASONS:

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's = I loved this show for basically the same reasons that I loved Symphogear, and A's also had the best hero/villain dynamics that I've ever seen in an anime. There were several times in this season where I truly didn't know if I was cheering for Nanoha and Fate or the Wolkenritter, because both sides were so interesting and had such great motivations. Plus, Symphogear never exists if Lyrical Nanoha (and A's in particular) doesn't blaze that trail for violent, action-packed magical girl anime nearly a decade prior. NANA WILLS IT!

Selector Infected WIXOSS = The first season of a wild roller coaster ride filled with drama, mystery, suffering, death, and children's card games. It did an amazing job at setting up the eerie world and high stakes of the Selector battles and getting me invested in wanting to see the girls make it out with their lives and minds intact. The dramatic moments were executed perfectly, right up to the cliffhanger ending to set up the second season.

Lostorage Conflated WIXOSS = The fourth and final season of the aforementioned wild roller coaster ride. After dropping off a bit in the middle seasons, this season definitively wraps up the WIXOSS story in a very enjoyable way that brings together the Selector and Lostrage casts for one final struggle. WIXOSS as a whole also has my favorite example of a character being upgraded from a relatively minor role in the early part of the story to playing a very important role in the later part of the story, but it does so in a way that still feels organic and not forced.

FILMS:

Your Name = I saw this in theaters and it was one of the most beautiful experiences I've ever had. The story, the romance, the artistic beauty, the fact that it actually managed to make me cry like a little bitch in the theater... it just really hit hard for me.

The Disappearance Of Haruhi Suzumiya = A crazy but beautiful story with plenty of plot twists and emotional impacts. The Haruhi series itself was pretty good at making me invested in the cast, but this movie made me appreciate them so much more. Yuki didn't deserve this...

Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion = Yes, I gave this movie a 10/10 after only giving the Madoka Magica TV anime a 9/10. Fucking sue me. The story and animation were even more amazing than the series itself, and Homura's journey is one of the greatest characters arcs that I've ever seen in an anime. Plus, it takes a lot of courage for a writer to completely dismantle the overall happy ending of the original story and show how truly horrible and selfish of a person Homura actually was the whole time. Betraying the universe itself is the ultimate heel turn.

That's all of the 10/10's that I've given so far, and I severely doubt my top 3 of Symphogear, Outlaw Star, and Kaleido Star will be changing any time soon. Also, Deca-Dence this season has the potential to join these 10/10's if the ending turns out really good, but for now I would put it at a 9/10.

A Place Further Than The Universe

of all the shows mentioned here that I haven't watched yet, I think this is the only one I'm particularly curious to watch. seems like the perfect thing to cheer me up if I'm feeling down <_<

I only have (and because of how I am, probably only ever will have) one 10/10 anime: Chronicles of the Going Home Club. It's just some silly episodic skitbased comedy but I probably laughed as much at it as all the other comedy anime I've watched combined. Something about it just lines up perfectly with my sense of humour, I don't think there was even a single skit over the whole show that I disliked.

And because this is anime/other stuff, gonna mention Yumina the Ethereal as a 10/10 VN. it's this silly concept (but occasionally serious plot) actiony story about a school where the student council president is decided by all the clubs in the school battling it out in a giant debate tournament. Except "debates" are done using this magi-tech sort of system that converts your willpower and strength of opinions and etc into actual weaponry that you get to beat up the person you're debating with

I'm very picky about what anime I watch and try to avoid anything that leans too heavily into anime tropes. Anyway I'm watching Land of the Lustrous which seems to be working for me, I was hesitant about the cgi but it's so damn pretty.

Got a lot of other shows I want to watch and some movies, I could really do with rewatching Akira and I need some more Ghost in the Shell in my life.

Revolutionary Girl Utena is my favourite show by far

My 10/10 VN picks are:

Subarashiki Hibi: possibly one of the best things I've read in my entire life. It's a bit difficult to describe, but it is loosely based on a lot of real life stories the author gleaned off of high school students. It's extremely emotional, sometimes funny, sometimes scary, many times sad. It makes you question identity or the value of reality in the deepest way. I'll say the first chapter is a bit confusing, but it does serve as a backdrop to the characters rather than the backdrop to the story. The story picks up quick and constantly leaves you wondering. It also has my favorite character possibly of all time, which is Yuuki

999: I think this one got me into VNs in the first place. I like this one particularly because of the discussions surrounding it. I think it opened my eyes to discussion as a whole because it made me research a lot of different concepts, and the Word of God interview that happened about a year later that destroyed any doubts on various debates was a moment in my life that I found particularly memorable. But aside from the discussions, it's one that makes you constantly wonder what's actually going on, and it felt like there was a twist around literally every corner. Whether or not ZTD managed to wrap up the 999 experience for me is... questionable but I didn't mind some aspects of it. I think 999 made me severely overestimate the character of Akane, or ZTD itself simply didn't do her justice. Either way, worth reading if it means you also have to read the other 2 continuations

You and Me and Her (Totono): To say it in a way that more ppl here could understand, it's basically just a straight up better written, better conceived Doki Doki Literature Club, which I also liked but now I know Totono exists. Without saying much, this is straight up a love story, but it's also a story about sad fates. You'll feel an obsession of a character through the screen, and the entire time you can merely choose to accept it or try to break from it. All I'll say is, try literally everything you can think of because you're rewarded with interesting dialogues, and really really pay attention when you get to a certain section where you walk down a memory lane. I would say it's a bit difficult to justify not calling one of the girl the best girl because she's amazing, and by the end, you almost have to wonder if... maybe she's still watching lol. Also, the best sex scene in anything that's ever existed.

I can't speak for my top animes, but I can speak for my top Visual Novels.

Rewrite: Fantastic characters, great emotional feels stories, one of the best soundtracks in any game I've played. The several months it took me to complete it 100% were a hell of an adventure.

Umineko no naku koro ni: Greatest soundtrack ever. Great cast, my favorite character of all time included, crazy story that went in directions I never expected when I picked the game up on a whim, and it introduced me to one of my favorite VN authors.

Fault Milestone Series: Absolutely stunning art style. Great character design. Has an overarching story that will span many games, but each game also has a self contained story that hits right in the feels. Although the game takes place in a fantasy world, the plot lines and story really relate to real world issues. The only problem is how slow they are in making new games. It's been 5 years since the last game.

I'm probably not as well-versed in visual novels as some of the other people here (unless you count anime adaptations which I've seen plenty of >_>), but the When They Cry franchise (Higurashi/Umineko) is absolutely phenomenal.

I finished Twin Angel: Twinkle Paradise, and man... that was just ridiculous. Every episode made it feel more and more like a parody of magical girl anime rather than a normal one. Whether it actually was a parody or just had really good comedic timing doesn't really matter at this point, because it was hilarious either way. The fights were solid (but not as good as something like Nanoha or Symphogear), the story was decent (but not as good as something like Madoka or YuYuYu), the art/animation was pretty good, but the real selling point was the comedy and the girls being complete dorks in almost every scene. Plus I guess the fanservice was nice too.

Overall, I give it an 8/10. Pretty good anime for essentially being a glorified advertisement for slot/pachinko machines. I'm gonna re-watch Twin Angel Break soon as well (I had mentioned before that I watched Break when it aired in 2017 without even knowing it was a direct sequel) so maybe this second time though now that I've actually seen Twinkle Paradise will improve my opinion of Break.

Funimation is adding more Aniplex titles to its catalog:

https://www.funimation.com/blog/2020/09/07/saekano-the-asterisk-war-and-even-more-iconic-aniplex-series-join-the-funimation-catalog/

Saekano -How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend- (subbed only, seemingly season 1 only)

The Asterisk War (subbed and dubbed, seasons 1 and 2)

MEKAKUCITY ACTORS (subbed only)

Plastic Memories (subbed only)

Vividred Operation (subbed and dubbed)

Let me focus on a certain part here:

Vividred Operation (subbed and dubbed)

As far as I know, Vividred Operation doesn't actually have a dub. So either that's just a typo, or Funimation just announced a new dub. And if it's the latter, then I have to ask: Why? Why pick Vividred Operation out of all the possible sub-only Aniplex shows they could have chosen?

I vaguely remember Vividred Operation, didn't it have girls with jets on their legs or something? Or was that something else?

Also is "Happy Sugar Life" licensed anywhere? I'm vaguely interested in it after reading the premise but haven't seen it on any streaming services, which is kind of rare these days.

You're probably thinking of Strike Witches, in Vividred they had anti-gravity shoes. Was really forgettable tbh.

Yen Press licensed it in 2019, the scanlation has been finished for a long time though.

I believe that's one of the shows that was picked up (and locked away) by Amazon. So check Amazon Prime Video, and if it's not there, then I have no idea.

Oh, it is on there. I must have forgotten to check or something. I guess if all else fails it's probably on Amazon Prime.

I mentioned in the other topic I beat the final boss the other week. 34 time pieces in total. Picked out the songs I liked and downloaded and added them to my Playlist. Ive beaten all the bosses and had some various time rift pieces left. Also didn't beat cheating the race.

The final boss sequence was pretty great.

Oh my bad I didnt notice it. How did you feel about Vanessa? It was one of the most atmospheric sequences Ive ever felt in a platformer. Too bad its so short.

Also will you be going for the rest of the time pieces? I dont think youd have gotten to the Arctic Cruise or Nyakuza either.
